IOWA CITY, Iowa
– No. 22 Purdue men's swimming demonstrated its depth over the course of the three-day Hawkeye Invitational, winning the nine-team meet despite claiming victories in just two events.

The Boilermakers won a multi-day invitational meet on the road for the first time since November 2001 at Northwestern. Purdue accomplished the feat without the services of its award-winning divers, who were competing at the Texas Hall of Fame Diving Invitational this week.

FINAL TEAM SCORES
1.) #22 Purdue 875.5 (No Divers)
2.) #18 Minnesota 813
3.) Iowa 797.5
4.) Grand Canyon 754
5.) Missouri State 356
6.) South Dakota 158
7.) South Dakota State 92
8.) Wisconsin 58 (Divers Only)
9.) Michigan State 9 (Divers Only)

Brett Riley (400 IM) and Joe Young (100 fly) accounted for Purdue's event victories, both coming on Friday. But the Boilermakers ended up winning 13 races in evening finals, including four B finals.

Purdue scored 50-plus team points in five individual events. The Boilermakers had five of the eight A finalists in the 100 backstroke, helping them rack up a team-high 73 points in the event. They also had at least five of the top 13 finishers in the 200 butterfly (59 points), 400 individual medley (57) and 500 freestyle (50).

Nikola Acin (43.53) established a Purdue freshman record in the 100 freestyle Saturday, eclipsing a mark that had stood since the 2011 Big Ten Championships while taking third in the event. He moved into sixth place in program history. He also joined Purdue's all-time top 15 lists in the 50 and 200 free as well as the 100 back this week. The freshman was a key contributor to relays as well. He teamed with Nikola Bjelajac, Gabi Gomez-Treig and James Boone on a 400 free relay that that posted the second-fastest time (2:54.07) in program history.

Kiki Komlenic (2nd in 100 back, 3rd in 200 back), Grant Lewis (2nd in 200 fly, 3rd in 400 IM), Erik Juliusson (2nd in 200 IM), Tim Barth (3rd in 100 back) and Nick McDowell (3rd in 500 free) joined Acin, Riley and Young as individual medalists.

This team can be special, they care about each other, staying positive when things go poorly and humble when things go well, hungry to be coached! Good night from Iowa City! https://t.co/8OdL9BoU2e

Barth moved into fifth place in program history in both backstroke events with a pair of career-best times (47.65 in 100, 1:43.54 in 200). Acin and Barth each posted a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cut), headlining a group of nine Boilermakers to hit at least one of those nationwide benchmarks this week.

David Forsyth and Riley joined Acin as Purdue's breakout freshmen. Forsyth was Purdue's top finisher in the mile (15:22.00), moving into 10th place in program history. He also finished among the top 10 overall in the 400 IM and 500 free. Riley scored in both the 200 breaststroke and the mile Saturday after winning the 400 IM Friday.

A full scoring breakdown for the Hawkeye Invitational will be compiled and posted this coming week at PurdueSports.com. Up next for the Purdue swimmers is the December break in the schedule, which features the annual winter training program during the semester break. After traveling to Hawaii for its winter training trip last year, the Boilermakers will be remaining at home this year. Purdue's next full meet is Jan. 11 at Michigan State.
