<br /><br />Jackie Smailis was part of team season-best times in four events Thursday, leading the way for Purdue on day 1 of the IU Invitational.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.
– Jackie Smailis was part of team season-best times in four events Thursday, leading the way for Purdue women's swimming on day 1 of the IU Invitational.

Jade Knueppel eclipsed the the Boilermakers' freshman record in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 23.06 in the prelims. That bested Carly Marshall's freshman benchmark (23.11) from the 2012 Big Ten Championships. Courtney Kresl also moved into 14th place in program history with a career-best time of 23.05 in the 50 free.

Smailis became the first Boilermaker this season to break 23 seconds in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 22.99 in the prelims of the event while qualifying for the C final. She was also a big part of Purdue's top quartets in the 200 free and 400 medley relays, both groups posting top-10 times in program history.

Smailis led off the 400 medley relay with a 100 backstroke split of 53.80 that stands as a team season best. She teamed with Jinq En Phee, Taite Kitchel and Danielle Auckley for a fourth-place finish in the event. Their time of 3:36.09 ranks fourth in program history. Smailis has swum the leadoff leg on all four of the fastest 400 medley relay teams in program history.

Knueppel, Kresl, Auckley and Smailis teamed up on the Boilermakers' top 200 free relay team. The foursome posted a time of 1:31.43, which ranks 10th in program history.

Maizie Seidl and Emily Meckstroth both scored in the B final of the 500 free. Seidl posted a Purdue season-best time of 4:49.71 in the final, dropping 12 seconds off her previous career best in the event. Meckstroth posted a personal season-best time of 4:51.14 in the prelims.

Kitchel scored in the C final of the 200 IM with a Purdue season-best mark of 2:00.93.

Smailis led the way as four Boilermakers scored in the C final of the 50 free. Auckley (23.00), Kresl (23.05) and Knueppel (23.06) were all just a few hundredths off Smailis' new team benchmark for the young season.

The IU Invitational continues Friday with prelims at 9 a.m. ET and finals at 5 p.m.
