B Cuts for Acin, Juliusson Highlight Day 1 at Iowa

<br /><br />Nikola Acin broke 20 seconds in the 50 free and Erik Juliusson also posted a B Cut while finishing as the runner-up in the 200 IM.

IOWA CITY, Iowa
– Nikola Acin broke 20 seconds in the 50 freestyle and Erik Juliusson also posted a B Cut while finishing as the runner-up in the 200 individual medley, highlighting day 1 at the Hawkeye Invitational for Purdue men's swimming.

The team scoring is remarkably close among the top four teams after the first of three days of competition.

Acin posted a time of 19.94 in the A final of the 50 free, finishing sixth while moving into ninth place in program history.

Juliusson was the top qualifier in the 200 IM prelims (1:45.86) and improved on his time in the A final (1:45.81), but Grand Canyon's Mark Nikolaev dropped nearly four seconds off his prelim mark to win the event with a meet-record time of 1:43.43.

Acin and Juliusson accounted for the Boilermakers' first NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cuts) of the young season and also contributed to a relay team that posted a top-10 time in program history. Joe Young also accounted for a B Cut time of 47.65 in the 100 backstroke while leading off the 400 medley relay. It was a team season best in the event.

Led by Nick McDowell's third-place showing, Purdue had five of the top 11 finishers in the 500 free. The Boilermakers racked up 50 team points in the event. McDowell accounted for a team season-best time (4:23.83) and was joined by Grant Lewis in the A final. Batuhan Hakan won the B final, with freshmen David Forsyth and Brett Riley right behind him. Forsyth's time of 4:26.58 moved him into 14th place in program history.

Nikola Bjelajac (B final of 50 free) and Luke Ingram (C final of 200 IM) also won races in the evening finals session.

Trent Pellini (4th in 200 IM) and Ryan Lawrence (7th in 50 free) were A finalists for Purdue as well.

Young, Pellini, Juliusson teamed James Boone to help the Boilermakers' top 400 medley relay foursome finish as the runner-up with the eighth-fastest time (3:12.28) in program history. Boone was also part of the top 200 free relay team, joining forces with Acin, Lawrence and Bjelajac to register the sixth-fastest time (1:18.91) in program history.

The Hawkeye Invitational continues Friday with prelims at 11 a.m. ET and finals at 7 p.m.
