Dive-by-Dive Scoring
AUSTIN, Texas – As springboard finalists on day 1 of the Texas Hall of Fame Diving Invitational, Purdue's Emily Bretscher and Joe Cifelli both performed their best amidst the bright lights of the evening finals.
Bretscher finished third on 3-meter and Cifelli placed sixth on 1-meter. They both finished eighth in the prelims to earn the last spots in the finals.
Bretscher recorded scores over 60 points in each of the final three rounds to climb into third place, posting a list score of 347.85. She improved on her prelim score (306.20) by 41.65 points, topping 2018 NCAA 3-meter champion Brooke Schultz (Arkansas) by five hundredths of a point.
Cifelli improved on his prelim score (312.35) by 53.6 points, recording a personal season-high list score of 365.95 in the final. He posted a list-high score of 72.85 in round 5.
The Boilermakers registered four top-16 finishes Wednesday. Maggie Merriman (288.80) placed 13th and Morgan Meixner (273.05) 16th in the women's 3-meter prelim. Traditionally a top-16 finish is enough to advance or score at many collegiate invitational and championship meets.
Bretscher entered the sixth and final round of the prelim outside the top eight. But she ripped a clutch final dive, earning a list-high score of 63 to clinch the last spot in the final. That score was nine points higher than she registered in any other round of the prelim.
Springboard action at the Texas Hall of Fame Diving Invitational continues Thursday with the women on 1-meter and men on 3-meter. Prelims begin at 11 a.m. ET and finals start at 5:30 p.m. live on the Longhorn Network.
