PRINCEVILLE, Hawai'i The Purdue men's golf team started fast, but struggled down the stretch to finish round one in fourth place at the Warrior Makai Invitational.

The Boilermakers shot an opening-round score of 7-under par 281 to trail leader and 11th-ranked Pepperdine by eight shots. Ole Miss is second at 12-under par, while UAB is third at 10-under par. Cal State Fullerton is fifth at 6-under par.

Starting on the back nine, the Boilermakers started fast, playing the first 12 holes in a combined 12-under par. However, Purdue then struggled a bit on the latter half of the front nine, playing holes four through nine in a combined six-over par to fall out of the lead.

Three players paced the Boilermakers in round one with scores of 2-under par 70, good for T-16th. Jason Hong, Jarle Volden and Joe Weiler all tallied 70s in the opening round to lead Purdue. Playing as an individual, freshman Andrew Lewis also shot a 2-under par 70 to sit in 16th after 18 holes.

Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 30th at 1-under par 71 and Cole Bradley is tied for 52nd after shooting a 1-over par 73.

Round two will begin Monday at 2 p.m. ET. The Boilermakers will be paired with Pepperdine, Ole Miss and UAB.
