EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State shook off of an embarrassing loss to archrival Michigan last week with a defeat of one of the nation's hottest teams Saturday.

Piloted by backup quarterback Rocky Lombardi, who threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns, the Spartans defeated Purdue 23-13 at Spartan Stadium, ending the Boilermakers four-game winning streak that was highlighted by the dismantling of then-No. 2 Ohio State.

Michigan State wide receiver Jalen Nailor caught a 48-yard touchdown pass and David Blough was picked off for a third time on the ensuing drive to seal the victory in the final minutes of the game.

Blough, who entered the game with three consecutive 300-yard passing games, finished just short with 277 yards on 29 completions and 49 attempts.

Purdue's Rondale Moore caught 11 passes for 74 yards.

Purdue hosts No. 18 Iowa next week in West Lafayette.
