WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Ten Boilermakers won multiple events as the racing was competitive throughout at Purdue swimming & diving's season-opening Black & Gold Intrasquad meet Friday at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

The men's dual came down to the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. After having already helped the Black Team win the 200 medley relay to open the night, Nikola Bjelajac and Trent Pellini teamed with Nick Sherman and James Boone to give their team a sweep of the relays. The 400 free relay win made the Black Team victorious 131-128.

Taite Kitchel led the way for the Gold Team by sweeping the butterfly events coupled with a victory in the 200 individual medley. She essentially won the 100 fly and 200 IM back-to-back, with just the traditional 10-minute meet break in between. The Gold Team was a 136-122 winner.

Joe Young would have matched Kitchel as a three-time event winner for the Gold Team. He was victorious in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. But after touching first in the 200 back, he suffered a post-race disqualification for going farther than 15 yards underwater following a turn.

Other event sweeps included: Emily Meckstroth (Gold) and Nick McDowell (Gold) in the distance freestyle events, Jinq En Phee (Gold) and Pellini (Black) in the breaststroke, Jackie Smailis (Black) in the backstroke and Bjelajac (Black) in the freestyle sprints.

Megan Johnson (Black) won the 100 and 200 free while also finishing second to Meckstroth in the 500. Erik Juliusson (Black) was victorious in the 200 fly and 200 IM while also finishing second to Young in the 100 back.

The divers opted to compete in a recreational team event utilizing both springboards and the platforms. It was not formally scored.

Other event winners included Danielle Auckley (50 free) for the women and Batuhan Hakan (200 free) for the men. Kiki Komlenic became the winner of the 200 back when Young was disqualified. Auckley teamed with Jade Knueppel and Smailis to give the Black Team a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 free.
