WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Chad Ryland kicked a 24-yard field goal as time expired, sending Eastern Michigan celebrating into the visitor's locker room and Purdue to 0-2.
The Eagles claimed a 20-19 upset and the Boilermakers were left still searching for a first win on a schedule that brings Missouri and Boston College into Ross-Ade Stadium before they hit the Big Ten trail.
"It's an embarrassing loss," Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm said. "We need to feel that way. It doesn't get any easier. Every game after that is going to be a challenge and after that performance, I'm sure that other teams won't come in here very scared of us."
D.J. Knox rumbled for a 45-yard score that gave the Boilermakers a one-point lead with 6:41 to play. But Knox was called for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play, moving the PAT back 15 yards a forcing Purdue to try for an extra-point rather than go for 2.
Kai Higgins intercepted Tyler Wiegers' deflected pass on EMU's next play, effectively handing the game to Purdue. However, the Boilermakers couldn't convert as Spencer Evans missed his first field goal inside 40 yards since joining the team.
Purdue had EMU on the ropes again, sacking Wiegers on a third-and-8 attempt, but Cornel Jones was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct to extended the drive.
Purdue hosts Missouri next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
