WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's golf team struggled late in round two, but still put itself in position for a team title at the Boilermaker Invitational, sitting in a fourth-place tie after 36 holes at the Kampen Course.
The Boilermakers totaled a two-round total of 5-over par 581 (287-294) to sit just two shots off the team lead held by No. 26-ranked Kent State and No. 37-ranked Northwestern. Indiana is third at 4-over par, while Purdue and Toledo are tied in fifth place at 5-over par.
The teams braved brutal weather conditions over the final 12 holes and scores reflected that. Temps dropped 15 degrees into the upper 40s and winds shifted to the north, gusting at times to 25 miles per hour. The result was just one team (Toledo) shooting better than 293 during the final 18 holes as the squads found scoring hard to come by.
Senior All-American candidate Brian Carlson is tied for fifth at 2-under par 142 (70-72), three shots off the pace of UCF's Bobby Bai (-5). Jarle Volden is tied for 12th at 1-over par 145 (73-72) and Cole Bradley is tied for 20th at 2-over par 146 (74-72).
Playing as an individual, Timmy Hildebrand is tied for ninth at even-par 144 (72-72).
BRADLEY QUOTABLE
"We didn't finish great in the second round, but we hung in there and gave us a chance to win tomorrow. It was very tough out there today and teams had to really fight to score well. I thought Brian (Carlson), Cole (Bradley) and Jarle (Volden) played pretty well in the second round. It's going to be another tough day with the weather on Sunday, so we need to stay mentally tough and make some shots when we can."
STAT OF THE DAY
Through the front nine of the second round, Purdue was 10-under par as a team and in the lead by four shots. The Boilermakers then recorded just one birdie on the back nine and played the back nine in 15-over par as a counting team. The Boilermakers surged on the back nine of the first round, playing the back nine in 6-under par to move near the top of the leaderboard, setting up their wild second round.
BOILER NOTABLES
