WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- In its first Big Ten dual at home this spring, the Purdue women's tennis team made easy work of Wisconsin on Friday, despite the final score reading 5-2. The Boilermakers quickly clinched the match at 4-0 inside the program's Schwartz Tennis Center by securing back-to-back victories in doubles and the first three singles matches.
Purdue's Alex Sabe and Seira Shimizu opened the contest with a 6-2 win over Sara Castellano and Michelle Linden on court three. Freshmen Ena Babic and Zala Dovnik then clinched the doubles point, defeating Melissa Pick and MaryAnn Rompf by the same score on court two. At the first position, Silvia Ambrosio and Caitlin Calkins' match was left unfinished one game-point shy of the complete sweep.
In singles, Babic notched a 6-3, 6-0 win against Rompf on court three in the first match off. Ambrosio followed with a straight-set victory on court one, defeating No. 113 Keberle 6-2, 6-3, while her doubles partner clinched the dual for the Boilermakers on court six. Calkins bested Linden 6-1, 6-3 for her first individual win since Jan. 26.
Sophomores Rafaella Baquerizo and Sabe both fell to the Badgers in singles. The first lost 6-3, 6-1 on court two, while the second retired at 4-6, 7-6 (13-11) on court four.
Shimizu closed out the match for Purdue with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) win at the fifth position.
