PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's golf team used a solid third round to catapult three teams and finish in sixth place at the John Hayt Invitational held at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Led behind Brian Carlson's second individual title of his career, the Boilermakers totaled a 54-hole tally of 8-over par 872 (298-288-286) to finish in sixth place, 20 shots behind champion and No. 7-ranked Auburn (-12). No. 24-ranked North Carolina was second at 11-under par and Liberty was third at 3-under par. UCF finished fourth at 5-over par and Jacksonville was fifth at 6-over par.
The Boilermakers defeated top-50 programs North Florida (No. 25), Louisville (No. 39) and Tennessee (No. 49) to finish in the top half of the strong field.
The Boilermakers struggled in the first round, but regained their form over the final two rounds and posted a score of 2-under par over the final 36 holes, the fourth-best score in the field.
Carlson became the first repeat winner for the Purdue golf team since William Sjaichudin (3) and Adam Schenk (2) won at least two career events, all of which came during the 2010-11 season. Carlson also was victorious at the 2015 Windon Memorial Classic as a sophomore.
Carlson totaled a 9-under par 207 (67-70-70) to defeat North Florida's Andrew Alligood by one shot. The field consisted of 11 players ranked in Golfstat's top 100.
Carlson's 207 is the ninth-lowest score in school history and Carlson is now the only player in school history to have three scores of 207 or lower during his career.
Carlson now owns a 71.71 stroke average this season and has posted four top-10 finishes in eight events, including three top-five finishes. He has been at even- or under-par in 14 of his 24 rounds this year, including six rounds in the 60s. His six rounds in the 60s are already the sixth most in a year in school history.
Jarle Volden finished tied for 28th at 3-over par 219 (74-72-73), freshmen Joe Weiler (79-72-71=222) and Cole Bradley (78-74-72=224) were T-41st and T-49th, respectively, while freshman Jason Hong tied for 70th (80-76-74=230). Timmy Hildebrand, playing as an individual, tied for 35th at 221 (73-73-75).
Purdue will next host the Boilermaker Invitational at the Kampen Course on April 14 and 15.
