Long Beach, Calif. ââ'¬" After a week of training in California, the Purdue women's tennis team will return to campus winners as the program defeated Long Beach State on Saturday. The Boilermakers opened their week-long vacation with a pair of losses against top-10 teams Northwestern and Illinois, but closed it with a meaningful 4-3 victory over the Beach.
Purdue opened the match with wins in doubles on courts one and three. Silvia Ambrosio and Caitlin Calkins defeated Lalita Devarakonda and Natalia Munoz 7-6 at the first position, while Alex Sabe and Seira Shimizu overpowered Carlota Casasampere and Maren Helgo 6-2 at the third. On court two, Boilermakers Ena Babic and Zala Dovnik lost 6-4 to 2. Lena Pacholski and Sadaf Sadeghvaziri.
In singles, Purdue secured straight-set victories on courts two, three and four. Sabe defeated Munoz 6-3, 6-2 at the second. Babic bested Helgo 6-1, 6-4 at the third, and Shimizu outlasted Sadeghvaziri 6-4, 7-6 at the fourth.
On court one, Ambrosio lost the only three-setter to Pacholski 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Dovnik fell 6-0, 6-2 to Devarakonda on court five, and Calkins lost 6-4, 6-4 to Casasampere on the final.
