PALM COAST, Fla. - The Purdue men's golf team opened the spring season in impressive fashion, winning its first two matches in the Big Ten Match Play Championship held at the Ocean and Conservatory Courses at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
The Boilermakers topped Iowa, 4.5 to 1.5, in the morning round, before cruising past Michigan 4-2 in the afternoon set.
"I'm really proud of the guys and their effort today," head coach Rob Bradley said. "We played very well in both matches. It's great to get this match play experience early in the year and we are really looking forward to getting back on the course tomorrow."
In the morning round against the Hawkeyes, Bradley got solid performances from junior Jarle Volden and Brian Carlson to lift the Boilermakers to the victory. Volden was dominant in his win over Aaron DeNucci to get Purdue on the board. After falling one-down with a bogey on the first hole, Volden played the next 11 holes in 7-under par before closing the match with a par on 13th hole.
Carlson also played outstanding golf, playing his 17 holes in 4-under par, losing just two holes in his match with Schaake.
Freshman Jason Hong was also strong in his match with Benton Weinberg, recording six birdies against just one bogey to win his match 2-and-1. Joe Weiler tallied five birdies against two bogeys to drop just two holes in a 3-and-1 win over Alex Moorman. Cole Bradley recorded a 2-under par score in halving his match with Sam Meuret.
Volden continued his excellent play into the afternoon against Michigan, where he defeated Charlie Pilon, 3-and-2. Volden was 4-under par through 16 holes, recording five birdies against just one bogey.
Weiler improved to 2-0-0 on his day with a 5-and-3 win over Connor Prassas. Weiler took control of the match by winning three straight holes in the middle of the round to go 4-up and cruise to the victory.
Carlson had an outstanding afternoon as well, defeating a very good player in Kyle Mueller, 1-up. Carlson recorded nine birdies against three bogeys. Carlson won a crucial hole on his 17th hole with a birdie on the par-3 12th hole, then held on to win the match with a par on the par-4 13th hole.
Hong never trailed in his match with Ian Kim, holding a 2-up or better lead during each of his last 12 holes.
The Boilermakers were 19-under par in their morning matches, while posting a 17-under par score in the afternoon wave.
Purdue, Minnesota and Wisconsin all own a 2-0 record in the West division, while Michigan State and Ohio State are 2-0 in the East division. The division winners will play tomorrow afternoon for the right to be Big Ten match play champions. Purdue leads with 8.5 matches won, while Minnesota is second at 7.5 matches won.
The Boilermakers will face Minnesota in Saturday's morning session.
