MINNEAPOLIS - Purdue men's swimming & diving opened the Big Ten Championships with a program-record time in the 200 medley relay.

The Boilermakers' quartet of Joe Young, Trent Pellini, Erik Juliusson and Nikola Bjelajac posted a time of 1:26.19 while finishing seventh, eclipsing a team benchmark from the 2015 Big Ten Championships.

Purdue has established a relay record at Big Tens in four of the last five seasons.

The 800 freestyle relay team of Batuhan Hakan, Adam Noens, Jackson Higgins and James Boone registered a time of 6:28.94, good for fifth in program history. The quartet finished in eighth place.

In the 200 medley, Young (21.66), Pellini (23.63) and Juliusson (21.12) all posted better 50-yard splits than their counterparts on the 2015 record-setting team. Pellini was .44 hundredths of a second faster on the breaststroke leg, Young accounted for a .32 hundredths improvement on the leadoff backstroke leg and Juliusson was .2 tenths faster on the butterfly leg.

Hakan led off the 800 free relay with a 200 split of 1:36.43, which moved the freshman into sixth place in program history. Higgins (1:36.95) also finished his leg under 1:37.

Young, Pellini, Juliusson and Bjelajac were all part of their first program records Wednesday. Pellini and Bjelajac are freshmen.

Thursday's events include the 500 free, 400 IM, 50 free, 1-meter diving and the 400 medley relay. Swimming prelims begin at noon ET, diving prelims are set for 2 p.m. and the finals session gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
