RIO GRANDE, P.R. - The Purdue men's golf team capped off a successful week with another strong performance to finish the Puerto Rico Classic in third place with a 5-over par 857, held at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa's Ocean Course.
The Boilermakers totaled a third-round score of 6-over par 290 to finish the 54-hole event in third place at 5-over par 857 (277-290-290). Tuesday's score of 290 was the fourth-best score of the day, despite a strong wind that blew across the island for most of the day.
Purdue recorded a top-three finish for just the third time in 20 all-time trips to the Puerto Rico Classic. The others came in 2012 and 2002.
"I'm proud of the way we played this week and I thought we showed some good balance and depth," head coach Rob Bradley said. "We had a lot of guys step up this week and really perform well. We are going to keep getting better, but this should give us a lot of confidence moving forward. We stayed positive all week and really fought to keep it going. It was a great performance for us."
The youthful Boilermakers, which played three freshmen on the counting team, finished third behind No. 16-ranked Clemson (+2; 854) and No. 8-ranked and defending national champion Oklahoma (+3; 855). Purdue finished ahead of No. 7 Georgia Tech (+7), No. 1 Alabama (+14), No. 20 Kentucky (+40), No. 29 Marquette (+32) and No. 35 North Carolina State (+18), in addition to traditional powers Georgia (+19) and Ohio State (+30).
Freshman Jason Hong wrapped up an outstanding tournament with a sixth-place finish at 1-under par 212 (69-73-70). The Australian started the day by bogeying his first two holes, but settled in to play his final 16 holes in 3-under par to earn his second top-10 finish of the season. Hong made his mark on the par-5s, ranking fourth in the field in par-5 scoring at 6-under par.
Four of the five players ahead of Hong on the leaderboard are ranked Nos. 1, 26, 46 and 74 in the Golfstat individual rankings. It marked the fourth-best finish by a Purdue golfer in 20 all-time appearances at the Puerto Rico Classic.
As a team, Purdue led the field in par-5 scoring at 22-under par. It was third in par-4 scoring (+19).
Senior Brian Carlson finished tied for 12th at 1-over par 217 (68-69-77) after a strong opening 36 holes. It was his fourth top-20 finish in six events this year for the senior from Connecticut.
Junior Jarle Volden also recorded a top-20 finish, his first of the season, after a final-round, even-par 71 moved him into a 17th-place tie at 3-over par 216 (69-76-71). Volden withstood a three-hole stretch of bogeys midway through his round and finished with a birdie on his final hole to jump into the top 20.
Freshmen Cole Bradley and Joe Weiler rounded out Purdue's balance, finishing T-31st and T-38th respectively. Bradley finished at 7-over par 220 (73-72-75) while Weiler totaled a 9-over par 222 (71-77-74). Bradley overcame a four-bogey in six-hole stretch late in his round, capping off his day with a birdie on the final hole, while Weiler double-bogeyed his first hole, but played the remainder of his round in 1-over par to help Purdue's team scoring.
Purdue and Oklahoma were the only teams in the field to have all five players finish among the top 40.
Purdue will be off until the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate on March 3 and 4, in Scottsdale, Arizona.
