RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- The Purdue men's golf team moved up two spots to remain in contention at the competitive Puerto Rico Classic, sitting in second place after 36 holes at the Rio Mar Country Club.
In a field laced with seven top-35 teams, Purdue is in second place at 1-under par 567 (277-290), just five shots behind No. 7-ranked Georgia Tech and three shots ahead of defending national champion and No. 8-ranked Oklahoma, No. 16-ranked Clemson and No. 35-ranked North Carolina State, all at 2-over par 570.
No. 1-ranked Alabama is in sixth place at 10-over par 578.
Scoring in round two was almost two strokes higher per round than round one as a strong breeze picked up on the challenging ocean course. Purdue's 290 was the fourth-lowest round of the day behind Georgia Tech's and Clemson's 286 and Marquette's 289. Marquette and Ohio State were the only teams to improve their scores on day two.
Brian Carlson continues to play outstanding golf, posting his second straight round in the 60s to sit in third place at 5-under par 137 (68-69). His 69 was one of just seven rounds in the 60s during round two. Carlson posted four birdies and two bogeys during his round, birdieing two of his last three holes to move inside the top five.
Freshman Jason Hong bounced back from a slow start to shoot a second-round 73 and sit in a 12th-place tie at even-par 142 (69-73) after 36 holes. Hong was 2-over par through 10 holes, but eagled the par-5 11th hole to get back to even-par. He then played the final 11 holes in 2-over par with two bogeys as he pursues his second career top-10 finish.
After starting his round 3-over through five holes, freshman Cole Bradley played his final 13 holes in 2-under par to fire a 1-over par 72 and finish 36 holes in a 24th-place tie at 3-over par 145 (73-72).
Junior Jarle Volden is also tied in 24th at 3-over par 145 (69-76) while freshman Joe Weiler is tied for 44th at 6-over par 148 (71-77).
The Boilermakers have finished in the top three just twice in 19 previous appearances at the Puerto Rico Classic. Purdue will be paired with Georgia Tech and Oklahoma on Tuesday, teeing off round three at 7:30 a.m. ET.
