RIO GRANDE, P.R. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's golf team matched its lowest round of the season and three players sit inside the top 10 after the opening 18 holes at the ultra-competitive Puerto Rico Classic.
The Boilermakers fired a 7-under par 277 to finish round one in fourth place, just three shots behind No. 8-ranked and defending national champion Oklahoma (-10). No. 35-ranked North Carolina State and No. 7-ranked Georgia Tech are tied for second at 8-under par.
Purdue is fourth at 7-under par 277, and is followed by No. 16-ranked Clemson (even), East Carolina (even), No. 1-ranked Alabama (+2) and Georgia (+4).
Purdue's 277 is tied for the fifth-lowest round in school history and is the lowest 18-hole Purdue team score in 58 all-time rounds at the Puerto Rico Classic.
Brian Carlson continues to play at a high level, sitting in a tie for third at 3-under par 68, the fifth-lowest 18-hole score by a Boilermaker in Puerto Rico Classic history. Carlson led the field in birdies in round one with seven while recording his eighth round (out of 16) of even-par or better.
Junior Jarle Volden and freshman Jason Hong are tied for ninth after identical rounds of 2-under par 69.
Volden was 4-under par through 14 holes, before a double-bogey on No. 17 (his 15th hole) dropped him to 2-under par for his round, where he finished. Nonetheless, his opening-round 69 was a season-low score and his seventh career round in the 60s.
Hong, meanwhile, played a steady round with five birdies against three bogeys, being under par for his round over his last 15 holes. He birdied his final hole (No. 1) to move into the top 10 and record his first career round in the 60s.
Freshman Joe Weiler also had a steady round at even-par 71, good for T-25th after 18 holes. Weiler recorded 15 pars, one eagle and two bogeys during his round.
Freshman Cole Bradley rebounded from a tough five-hole stretch on the back nine (4-over par) to finish with a 2-over par 73, good for T-37th.
The Boilermakers will be paired with Clemson and East Carolina in round two, teeing off at 8 a.m. ET, at the Rio Mar Country Club's Ocean Course.
