Feb. 10, 2018 PALM COAST, Fla. - Three Purdue golfers posted unbeaten records to lead the Boilermakers to a share of the Big Ten Match Play Championship, the first in school history.
The Boilermakers shared the title with Michigan State after drawing with the Spartans 3-3 in the championship match at the Hammock Beach Resort on Saturday.
It's the first Big Ten title of any sort since 1981 for the Purdue men's golf team.
"I'm really proud of the way we played all weekend," head coach Rob Bradley said. "We had a lot of players step up and post strong performances. It was a total team effort and a really good way to start the spring.
"We took a practice trip to Naples (Florida) last weekend and the guys put in some good work and were really focused. We got a lot done last weekend, so it was good to see it carry over to this weekend," added Bradley.
The Boilermakers finished with a match-play record of 3-0-1 after besting Minnesota in the morning session, 5-1. The morning rounds were shortened to nine holes due to heavy fog, but the shortened round didn't affect the Boilermakers, who won four matches while halving the other two.
Jarle Volden had the Boilermakers' most-dominant performance of the morning session, defeating Evan Long 4-and-3 to get Purdue on the board. Freshman Joe Weiler then won 3-and-2 and Brian Carlson's 2-and-1 victory propelled the Boilermakers into the finals. Freshman Jason Hong won his match, 1-up, while Timmy Hildebrand and Cole Bradley halved their matches to complete the victory.
In the first three matches to reach the finals, Purdue won 13.5 of a possible 18 points.
Purdue then continued where it left off in the championship match as Hong tallied Purdue's first point with a 6-and-4 victory. Brian Carlson and Jarle Volden then capped off their undefeated weekend with a 3-and-2 and 1-up victory, respectively, to offset three Michigan State victories to share the team title.
Carlson, Hong, a freshman from Australia and Volden all posted perfect 4-0 records during the week. Weiler, a freshman from Bloomington, posted a 3-1 record for the Boilermakers.
Purdue will head to Puerto Rico next weekend as it hosts the 26th annual Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Grande Resort & Spa in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The field includes national powers Kentucky, North Carolina State, Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, defending national champion Oklahoma, Clemson and Northwestern, among others.
