WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Bonus points and upsets were the key takeaways from No. 24 Purdue's split at Holloway Gymnasium on Sunday. The Boilermakers (5-2, 0-1 B1G) received bonus points at three weights in a 29-17 win over Princeton (0-5, 0-0 EIWA) in their first dual. A pair of top-10 upsets then came courtesy of No. 18 Luke Welch and No. 15 Dylan Lydy in a 25-14 setback to eighth-ranked Michigan (5-1, 2-0 B1G).
Purdue took seven weights from the Tigers with three earning bonus points. Ben Thornton (18-7) was the first Boilermaker to put bonus points on the board. The redshirt junior cruised to a 15-0 technical fall in 5:00 against Trey Aslanian at 133 pounds.
Trailing 10-5, Jacob Morrissey seized a neutral start from Princeton's Jonathan Schleifer by taking control of Schleifer's tie and putting him straight to his back for the fall at 5:16. The pin was the third of the season and the 16th of the 165-pounder's career.
No. 14 Shawn Streck (20-9) closed out the dual with a 6:12 pin of Michael Markulec. Streck, eyeing a major decision, was going to cut the Tiger loose after scoring a takedown in the third period. Markulec, however, did not attempt to get up and Streck seized the opportunity. The Boilermaker heavyweight got a left side underhook and stuck Markulec for his team-leading sixth pin of the season.
Michigan's ninth-ranked Drew Mattin came out hot against Welch, but the redshirt senior chipped away and his four-point nearfall in the closing frame of the 125-pound bout earned him an 11-7 upset. Mattin held a 6-3 lead after the first period on a pair of takedowns and a two-point nearfall. Welch, ranked 18th nationally, reversed the Wolverine and maintained his control on top throughout the second. Mattin went up 7-5 after he escaped to start the third, only to be takedown down and tilted by the Boilermaker.
It was Welch's first win on the mat over a top-10 opponent this season (he received a medical forfeit from No. 7 Ryan Millhof of Arizona State at the Michigan State Open). It was also his third career win over a top-10 opponent. Welch also notched a 7-1 decision against Matteo DeVincenzo of Princeton to take his season record to 18-4.
A pair of first period takedowns by No. 15 Lydy quickly set the tone in his match against No. 6 Myles Amine, as the redshirt sophomore knocked off the U-M All-American 6-4. Lydy escaped twice in the third and held Amine off as time ticked away.
Amine became the second top-10 foe the 174-pounder has upended this season and he stands as the highest-ranked opponent a Purdue wrestler has defeated this season. Lydy (22-8) now has five wins over ranked opponents this season.
Morrissey turned in his second win with bonus points in an 18-2 (5:36) technical fall of Michigan's Reece Hughes. The 2017 NCAA qualifier improved to 16-10 with the two wins Sunday.
With 14 back points in his two matches, the redshirt senior moved into a tie for sixth on Purdue's career list with 236. He also climbed into a tie for 13th on the career reversals list with 33. The reversal, which came against Hughes, was his 14th of the season, putting him into a tie for 18th on the season record list.
Nate Limmex (17-9) continued his way of grinding out wins. In a Midlands 141-pound quarterfinal rematch with Princeton's Pat D'Arcy, Limmex picked up his second win over the Tiger in less than two weeks with a 6-0 shutout. He followed up with a 4-3 victory over NCAA qualifier Sal Profaci of Michigan.
A road trip to Lincoln, Nebraska, is up next for the Boilermakers. Action against the Huskers (3-3, 1-1 B1G) is set for an 8 p.m. ET start from the Devaney Center.
