WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team capped off its five-match opening home slate in dominating fashion Friday, sweeping both Saint Louis and Valparaiso 7-0 inside the Schwartz Tennis Center. With the two victories, the Boilermakers improved to 4-1 in dual matches this spring.
Sophomores Rafaella Baquerizo and Caitlin Calkins remained undefeated through the doubleheader, each with three wins this season. In Purdue's first match, Calkins bested Saint Louis' Alba Salinas 6-0, 6-1 on court six and returned to the position to defeat Valparaiso's Randi Wind 6-1, 6-1. Baquerizo notched her third victory against the Crusaders as well, overpowering Jelena Vujanic 6-1, 6-0 on court three.
Fellow sophomore Alex Sabe and freshmen Seira Shimizu both bounced back from losses last Saturday against No. 23 Ole Miss; each improved to 4-1 with a pair of wins. On court two, Sabe bested Billiken Cassie McKenzie 6-4, 6-4 and Meg Modesto of Valparaiso without dropping a game. Shimizu defeated both Ariana Rodriguez of Saint Louis 6-1, 6-0 and Crusader Dao Sysouvanh 6-0, 6-1 on court four.
On court one, No. 86 Silvia Ambrosio overpowered the Billikens' Ally McKenzie 7-5, 6-2, and Ena Babic bested Claire Czerwonka of Valparaiso 6-3, 6-4. Babic also defeated Mariluz Rojo 6-0, 6-2 on court three in the first match of the day. Ambrosio did not compete in the second.
Lastly, freshman Zala Dovnik raised her win-loss record above .500 for the first time this season with wins over Carla Folch of Saint Louis and the Crusaders' Jordan Kopfer. Both matches were 6-1, 6-0 decisions.
In doubles, the Boilermakers again finished 6-0 against the field. The team did the same in its opening doubleheader with Cincinnati and Butler.
Up next, Purdue will travel to Pullman, Washington for its first road match of the season. First serve against the Cougars is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 3.
