MINNEAPOLIS - Kaersten Meitz's program-record time in the 1,000 freestyle headlined the six event victories for the Purdue swimming & diving teams on the opening night of the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals vs. Minnesota and Northwestern.
Meitz eclipsed her own team benchmark, winning the event in 9:38.46. She dropped .33 hundredths of a second off the record she set at the USA College Challenge in November 2016. The senior has posted Purdue-record times in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 free this season, eclipsing her own marks in all but the mile.
Meitz also raced in the 200 free about 10 minutes later Friday, finishing second to Minnesota's Mackenzie Padington by .11 hundredths of a second. Padington also went back-to-back in the 1,000 and 200.
The Purdue men were victorious in the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley and 1,000 free. Joe Young led the way with a team season-best time (48.82) in the 100 back, an event in which the Boilermakers had four of the top five finishers.
The Purdue divers posted seven top-five finishes in the springboard events. Samm Reese was the runner-up in the women's 3-meter competition with a career-best score of 342.90, which moved her up to 11th place in program history.
Taite Kitchel added a runner-up finish in the 200 butterfly to her victory in the 200 IM. She joined Meitz as the only Boilermakers to win an event at every dual meet this season.
Emily Meckstroth (10:01.30, 3rd) and Megan Johnson (1:48.82, 4th) posted personal season-best times via top-four finishes in the 1,000 and 200 free. Jinq En Phee joined Meitz as Boilermakers to register NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cuts).
The Big Ten Triple Duals conclude Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
