WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Men's basketball aims to make history Sunday.
The No. 3 Boilermakers (20-2, 9-0 B1G) go for their school-record 17th straight win when they face Indiana (12-9, 5-4) at 3:30 p.m. ET in Bloomington. The game will be televised by FOX.
On Thursday, Purdue tied the mark for consecutive wins with an entertaining 92-88 victory over No. 25 Michigan at Mackey Arena. Purdue also won 16 straight from Nov. 30, 1987, to Jan. 23, 1988; from Jan. 23, 1920, to Jan. 4, 1921; and from Jan. 25, 1902, to Jan. 16, 1904.
The Boilermakers boast the country's longest active winning streak, as well, and they have won 20 in a row at Mackey - the second-longest homecourt streak in the nation.
Coupled with Penn State's buzzer-beating 82-79 win at Ohio State on Thursday, the Boilermakers are the lone undefeated team in the Big Ten. Ohio State (18-5, 9-1) is a half-game behind Purdue.
Sophomore guard Carson Edwards earned Big Ten Co-Player of the Week honors after averaging 21.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 3.5 steals in the Boilermakers' convincing wins over Wisconsin at home Jan. 16 (78-50) and at Iowa on Jan. 20 (87-64). He shot 54.8 percent from the field (17 of 31), including 64.3 percent from three-point range (9 of 14).
Purdue tied the Big Ten record with 20 three-pointers against Iowa.
Sunday's game is the lone regular-season meeting between Purdue and Indiana. One point in the Governor's Cup will be on the line. The Boilermakers have won five of the last six meetings against the Hoosiers and are 11-9 under head coach Matt Painter.
Figgs to be Honored Sunday
Women's basketball (13-8, 4-3 B1G) plays host to Penn State (13-8, 4-4) at Mackey Arena on Sunday. Tipoff is set for noon ET. Purdue Athletics Hall of Famer Ukari Figgs (1996-99) will be honored, and the first 2,000 fans will receive a bobblehead. Tickets are available here.
Figgs was the point guard and co-captain for the 1999 NCAA championship team and was named the Women's Final Four Most Outstanding Player after scoring game highs of 24 points in the Boilermakers' semifinal victory over Louisiana Tech and 18 points against Duke in the title game.
The quick-witted Figgs was a fan favorite over the course of her career with the Boilermakers. As a senior, she averaged 16.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game and was a first team All-Big Ten selection and honorable mention All-American.
Figgs ranks third all-time in Purdue history in free throw percentage (.841). She is seventh in three-point field goals (174), 11th in assists (409), 15th in points (1,455) and 20th in steals (170). Figgs earned her bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
Selected in the third round (No. 28 overall) of the 1999 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks, Figgs played professionally for five seasons. The Sparks won the 2001 WNBA championship, and Figgs subsequently played for the Portland Fire in 2002 and the Houston Comets in 2003.
A native of Georgetown, Kentucky, Figgs was inducted into the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007 and returned to the Boilermakers as an assistant women's basketball coach from 2009 to 2011. She currently works as an assistant manager in the production engineering department at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in her hometown.
All former players in attendance will be introduced at halftime.
Also, fans sitting in the lower bowl of Mackey Arena will receive a "Rise Together. Beat Cancer" T-shirt. In honor of cancer fighters and survivors, the Boilermakers will wear pink uniforms, which will be auctioned off during the game.
4x400-Meter Excellence
How excellent is Purdue women's track & field in the 4x400-meter relay?
Consider the Boilermakers recorded two of the top 10 performances in the country at the Clemson Invitational on Jan. 20.
Senior Symone Black, senior Carmiesha Cox, sophomore Chloe Abbott and senior Brionna Thomas finished in 3:33.38 to rank third, while junior Kyelah Hodges, sophomore Samara Miller, senior Jahneya Mitchell and sophomore Myia Dorsey were clocked in 3:38.35 to rank ninth.
Oh, by the way, a third 4x400-meter relay, made up of Black, Cox, Miller and Mitchell, has the nation's 12th-fastest time at 3:39.37, set in December.
Meanwhile, sophomore Jaret Carpenter posted the nation's sixth-fastest 3,000-meter time (8:06.11) at Clemson.
The women's team is ranked No. 20 in this week's national poll, the first of the season.
The Boilermakers are back home at Lambert Fieldhouse on Friday (3 p.m. ET) and Saturday (9:30 a.m.) for the Fred Wilt Open. There is a duffle bag giveaway Friday and a T-shirt giveaway Saturday. Admission is free to all home meets.
Johnson Expected to Return
Redshirt junior diver Steele Johnson is expected to compete for the Boilermakers on Friday and Saturday at the Big Ten Triple Duals against Minnesota and Northwestern in Minneapolis.
Johnson, the NCAA 1-meter and 3-meter champion and Big Ten platform champion last season, has been sidelined since November with a foot injury.
On Jan. 20, senior Kaersten Meitz of the women's team swept the 200, 500 and 1,000 freestyle against No. 7 Indiana for the second year in a row.
Meanwhile, sophomores Brandon Loschiavo (platform diving) and Nick McDowell (1,000 freestyle) were victorious for the men's squad against the No. 3 Hoosiers.
Wrestling Takes Big Ten Break
With the Big Ten season at the halfway point, No. 24 wrestling (5-5, 0-4 B1G) will host a non-conference dual against North Dakota State (5-7) on Friday. Action gets underway at 7 p.m. ET at Holloway Gymnasium.
It is Frats to the Mats Night. During intermission, the two fraternities with the most members in attendance will participate in an arm-wrestling contest with the winner receiving a championship belt. Additionally, the Boilermakers will sign autographs following the dual.
On Sunday, Purdue take on No. 2 Ohio State (10-0, 5-0) at Graham High School in Saint Paris, Ohio.
Women's Tennis Concludes Homestand
Women's tennis (2-1) plays the final two matches of its season-opening five-match homestand with a Friday doubleheader against Saint Louis (0-2) at 1 p.m. ET and Valparaiso (2-0) at 6 p.m. There will be free pizza for fans attending the nightcap, while supplies last.
On Jan. 20 against No. 23 Ole Miss, freshman Ena Babic earned her first win over a ranked opponent, topping No. 62 Sabina Machalova 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Babic improved to 2-1 with the victory.
Sophomores Rafaella Baquerizo (2-0) and Caitlin Calkins (1-0) are undefeated for the Boilermakers on the young season.
Painter Advances to Round 2 of Infiniti Coaches Charity Challenge
Head men's basketball coach Matt Painter has advanced to Round 2 of the Infiniti Coaches Charity Challenge to raise money for the Smith Family BReaK Thru Fund.
Twenty-four coaches have moved on in the 10-week fan-vote challenge. Infiniti will make a $100,000 contribution to the winning coach's designated charity, with its total contribution exceeding $300,000.
Boilermakers everywhere are encouraged to vote every day.
Painter has finished in the top four each of the previous seven years, helping raise more than $200,000 for the Smith Family BReaK Thru Fund. In 2015, he raised $100,000 as Purdue fans stuffed the online polls to win the challenge.
The Smith Family BReaK Thru Fund is a West Lafayette-based organization whose mission is to fund research to fight Niemann-Pick Type C Disease (NPC). The fund was set up by a family with three children impacted by NPC, and it has financed more than $300,000 in research at Purdue since its inception in 2008.
