LINCOLN, Neb. ââ'¬" Nate Limmex registered the third top-10 upset for Purdue in less than a week in a 20-15 loss to No. 19 Nebraska at the Devaney Center on Friday. Bonus points at three weights were the difference as the 22nd-ranked Boilermakers split weights with the Huskers (4-3, 2-2 B1G) and moved to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten Conference duals.
Limmex put the first takedown on the scoreboard and overcame a second period rideout with a takedown in the third on his way to a 5-3 decision over No. 9 Chad Red. The 141-pounder received his fifth point courtesy of two stalling calls on Red.
"I struggled a bit on the mat tonight, but I'm really trusting my leg attacks and conditioning right now," Limmex said. "I knew I would have the advantage in the third period."
The win marks the highest-ranked opponent Limmex has beaten in his career as he improves to 18-9 in his redshirt sophomore campaign. Since Midlands, the Ada, Michigan, native, is 8-2 and he has surpassed his win total from last season by six.
"It was a good win to keep building confidence heading into the later part of the season," Limmex said. "It's nice to see all of the hard work and preparation start to pay off. I knew I would find my stride eventually; I just had to keep doing the right things in all areas."
No. 12 Dylan Lydy once again prevailed in sudden victory, scoring the winning takedown with 20 seconds remaining to beat Beau Breske 3-1. The 174-pound bout, the dual's finale, was knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation with each wrestler scoring an escape. Seven of Lydy's matches have needed extra time this season and he has now come out on the winning end five times. A redshirt sophomore hailing from Indianapolis, Indiana, Lydy lifts his record to 23-8, while posting his fifth straight victory.
After Nebraska took the first two weights in a dual that started at 184 pounds, 15th-ranked Shawn Streck was the first of four consecutive wins for Purdue. The heavyweight (21-9) turned in a 12-5 decision over David Jensen. In the first Big Ten start of his career, Devin Schroder (125) defeated Mitchell Maginnis, lifting his record to 15-6. At 133 pounds, Ben Thornton blanked a third opponent this season, Brian Peska, 6-0. The win brought the redshirt junior to 19-7.
The Boilermakers return to action in a road-home double feature next weekend. On Friday, they'll trek to University Park, Pennsylvania, to face Penn State at 7 p.m. ET. Purdue then returns to Holloway Gymnasium for a Sunday showdown with Illinois at 1 p.m. Prior to the dual with the Illini there will be a youth clinic. The clinic is free and open to youth eighth grade and younger. To register email sportspromo@purdue.edu.
