EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Luke Welch and Ben Thornton captured titles for the Purdue wrestling team at the season-opening Michigan State Open inside Jenison Field House on Sunday. Welch took top honors in an all-Purdue final at 125 pounds by beating teammate Devin Schroder 6-3. Thornton used a 5-3 decision to claim the 133-pound title, the first of his Boilermaker career, against Central Michigan's Dresden Simon.
Three other attached wrestlers placed for Purdue. Shawn Streck was third at 285 and Jacob Morrissey was sixth at 165 in the Open Division. True freshman Max Lyon rounded out the Boilermakers' placewinners as the 184-pound runner-up in the Freshman/Sophomore Division.
Welch took Schroder down once in each the second and third periods to win the second tournament title of his career. The redshirt senior finished 3-0 with a 6-4 sudden victory decision and he received a medical forfeit from seventh-ranked Ryan Millhof of Arizona State in the semifinals.
Schorder's run to the finals included a pair of top-20 upsets, knocking off Wisconsin's No. 18 Johnny Jimenez (7-2) and No. 20 Christian Moody of Oklahoma (9-8). The redshirt freshman also picked up a 7-1 decision over Sooner Dalton Duffield in his first match.
Thornton found success in his new weight class at 133 pounds. The redshirt junior notched a pair of low-scoring decisions in his first two matches to get into the finals. Takedowns in the first and second periods lifted him past Simon. In his three matches, Thornton did not surrender a takedown, with his opponent's five combined points coming on escapes.
"I felt good and I felt strong wrestling at 133 today," Thornton, Purdue's former 125-pounder, said. "I think I could have put some more points on the board [against Simon]. I was really working on my ties and I feel like my snaps were good, I just couldn't capitalize on specific positions to get my takedowns. Going from here, I really want to start working on racking up the points. Getting my first collegiate title feels good and it is good to get a win [like this] early in the season, but it doesn't' really mean much, we want to capitalize in March."
Streck slammed Central Michigan's Matt Stencel to his back off a takedown on the edge, pinning the Chippewa in a mere 1:06 in the third-place match at 285. The Merrillville, Indiana, native, went 4-1 on the day, winning with a pair of decisions and a major decision. The one setback suffered came at the hands of second-ranked Adam Coon of Michigan, 11-3, in the semifinals.
Over in the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Lyon outscored his opponents 29-12, recording a major decision and a decision. Cameron Caffey of Michigan State denied the rookie from winning his first tournament, dealing Lyon a 10-8 decision.
True freshmen Parker Filius and Alec White both placed at 141 pounds competing unattached in the Freshman/Sophomore Division. Filius took second and White placed fourth.
The Boilermakers' next outing sends them to Clifton Park, New York, for the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals. The Nov. 11 slate has Purdue meeting LIU Post, No. 22 North Carolina and Hofstra inside Shenendehowa High School East. The duals are set for 9:30 a.m. ET, 11:30 a.m., and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
