- Purdue avoided its first three-game non-conference losing streak in three years with an 89-64 win over No. 2 ranked Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
- Purdue's 25-point margin of victory was its second largest against a ranked foe in school history just behind a 92-65 win over No. 2-ranked North Carolina on March 20, 1969.
- The 89 points were the most against a ranked team during the Matt Painter era and most for the program since scoring 90 against 14th-ranked Iowa on Feb. 4, 1999.
- Coach Painter improved to 2-13 against top-five teams ... Purdue's last win against a top-five team was a 76-63 win over No. 2-ranked Ohio State on Feb. 20, 2011.
- Arizona has lost five times by 25 points or more since the 1983-84 season.
- Two of Purdue's last three wins against Arizona have been when they were either ranked No. 1 or No. 2 ... Purdue defeated top-ranked Arizona 72-69 on Nov. 25, 2000.
- The 25-point margin of victory was the eighth-largest margin of victory vs. a top-two ranked team by a team that was ranked in the top 25 since the 1949-50 season.
- After getting outrebounded by 12 in the last two games, Purdue outrebounded the Wildcats by 10 rebounds ... it marked just the fifth time since the 2010-11 season that Arizona had been outrebounded by 10 rebounds or more.
- Dakota Mathias scored 24 points with five rebounds and six assists ... he surpassed 800 career points in the victory and notched his second 20-point game of the season ... Mathias also held high-scoring guard Allonzo Trier, who had been averaging 29.4 points per game to eight points on 3-of-10 shooting with four turnovers.
- Carsen Edwards tallied 22 points for his fourth career 20-point game and third of the season ... he added four rebounds and made 5-of-9 3-pointers ... Edwards also made all three of his free throw attempts and has now made 18 free throws in a row.
- Vincent Edwards scored 17 points with eight rebounds and four assists ... he has scored in double-figures in every game this year ... Edwards moved into 31st place on the career points list (1,225 points) and 16th on the career assists list (323 asts.).
- Matt Haarms came off the bench for six points, five blocks and four rebounds ... it marked the second time this season that he has blocked five shots ... only A.J. Hammons and Russell Cross have had two games with five or more blocked shots as a freshman.
- Isaac Haas scored 12 points with four rebounds, going 4-of-4 from the free throw line ... Haas is now 37-of-45 (.822) from the free throw line this year.
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) Dakota Mathias scored 24 points to help No. 18 Purdue roll past No. 2 Arizona 89-64 in the seventh-place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis, sending the Wildcats home with three losses in three days.
The Boilermakers (5-2) had struggled with their shooting through two tournament losses of their own, but shot 57 percent and made 11 of 22 3-point attempts in a break-loose performance.
Carsen Edwards added 22 points in what could have been a possible title-game matchup in the eight-team tournament. Instead, the Boilermakers and Wildcats found themselves playing the final game just to salvage a win.
Now, shockingly, Arizona (3-3) is the lone team leaving the Bahamas with an 0-3 tournament record.
Freshman Deandre Ayton had 22 points before fouling out for the Wildcats, while junior Allonzo Trier - who came in averaging 27.8 points - finished with just eight on 3-for-10 shooting.
BIG PICTURE
Arizona: Paradise turned into a total nightmare for Arizona. There was the opening-game 90-84 loss to North Carolina State that left coach Sean Miller frustrated by his team's poor defense. Then there was the loss to SMU in which the Wildcats undercut any defensive gains by failing to secure stop-ensuring rebounds. This time, his team offered meager defensive resistance to a hot-shooting team that quickly gained confidence with each possession. And that raises the question: how far will the Wildcats fall in Monday's AP Top 25? Or will they stay in the rankings at all?
Purdue: The Boilermakers couldn't hold leads in their first-round overtime loss to Tennessee, then got out-toughed in a loss to Western Kentucky. Still, Mathias had insisted there was plenty to play for. His team came out and proved it, playing with a free-flowing confidence while knocking down open look after open look to reboot their suddenly sputtering offense. Purdue shot just 39 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind the arc in the first two tournament games, but had no trouble tearing through Arizona's defense.
