ATLANTA - The Purdue women's tennis team notched its third hidden-dual victory of the fall season against Georgia State last weekend. Their 4-3 win at the Piedmont Invitational kept the Boilermakers undefeated in like matches through October, with only one tie on the books back in September.
In singles, junior transfer Silvia Ambrosio continued to lead the way for Purdue on court one with her 2-6, 6-0, 11-9 victory over Kristin Rehse. Sophomore Alex Sabe and freshman Ena Babic also secured points for the Boilermakers on courts two and four, respectively. The returner defeated Arina Taluyenko 6-1, 6-4, with the newcomer also earning a straight set victory over Daniela Ramirez 6-3, 6-3.
Fellow sophomores Rafaella Baquerizo and Caitlin Calkins dropped their matches against the Panthers at the school's Clarkston Campus courts. The first was defeated by Damira Muminovic 7-6, 7-5, and the later was bested 6-4, 6-2 by Lara Vovk.
Purdue's second junior transfer, Amina Mukhametshina, also surrendered a point to Georgia State when she needed to retire in the second set against Elizabet Danailova at 6-4, 3-0.
In doubles, Ambrosio and Babic earned a team-high sixth victory against Danailova and Ramirez; the Boilermakers defeated the Panthers 7-5 on court one. On court two, Baquerizo and Mukhametshina clinched the doubles point and match for Purdue with their 7-6 win over Muminovic and Taluyenko.
The Boilermakers were scheduled to compete in two other hidden duals as part of the tournament; however, weather prevented the team from playing doubles against Air Force and Chattanooga. Prior to play being called, Purdue went 8-4 in singles matches against the Falcons and Mocs. Ambrosio, Mukhametshina and Sabe were responsible for six of the eight victories, while Calkins earned the seventh against Air Force and Babic notched the last against Chattanooga.
Up next, Ambrosio will represent the program at the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Indiana Wells, California, beginning Nov. 1. Her teammates will then join her out west for their final tournament of the fall; the three-day UNLV Invite kicks off Nov. 10.
