HARTFORD, Wis. ââ'¬" On a day when the scoring average was almost five strokes over par per round, the Purdue men's golf team struggled for most of the round, but surged late to finish the competitive Marquette Intercollegiate in an eighth-place tie.
Purdue shot a 16-over par 304 to finish the 54-hole tournament at 37-over par 901 (294-303-304) and in an eighth-place tie with Ole Miss. No. 1-ranked Texas A&M won the tournament with a 2-over par 866 (293-287-286) while UCLA finished second at 13-over par 877. Marquette, Florida State, Michigan State, South Florida and Wisconsin rounded out the top seven.
Unlike yesterday when Purdue played the final four holes in a combined 10-over par, the Boilermakers played the same holes in just 4-over par to move up the leaderboard late in the round, earning big head-to-head wins used for postseason criteria.
Leading the Boilermakers was freshman Jason Hong, who turned in another strong round. The native Australian finished tied for 12th at 3-over par 219 (74-70-75), his second career top-20 finish in just three career outings. Hong was 5-over par through 13 holes today, before an eagle-birdie-par-par-bogey finish completed his round and moved him to the cusp of a top-10 finish.
Brian Carlson finished tied for 27th at 9-over par 225 (75-78-72). Carlson was 2-over par through eight holes during the final round, but birdied hole Nos. 15 and 16 to move to even par, and his fifth round of even-par or better already this year.
Timmy Hildebrand finished tied for 47th at 14-over par 216 (72-78-80), Cole Bradley was tied for 51st at 15-over par 231 (73-77-81) and Jarle Volden tied for 75th at 22-over par 238 (83-78-77).
Individually, Joe Weiler tied for 70th at 20-over par 236 (79-80-77).
Purdue will be off next weekend before heading to Crooked Stick in Carmel, Indiana, and the Crooked Stick Invitational on Oct. 16 and 17.
