WINDERMERE, Fla. ââ'¬" Playing in one of college golf's biggest events, the Purdue men's golf team pieced together a consistent effort in round one of the Tavistock Invitational held at Isleworth Golf and Country Club.
The Boilermakers shot a 3-over par 291 to sit in a seventh-place tie after 18 holes, just five shots out of third place. Illinois leads after the first round with a 9-under par 279 while 10th-ranked Florida was second at 6-under par 282. No. 13-ranked Texas Tech (-2), No. 21-ranked California (-1), No. 12-ranked LSU (+1) and No. 27-ranked North Florida (+1) round out the top five.
Purdue and No. 9-ranked Vanderbilt are tied for seventh while Arizona (+4) and No. 6-ranked Auburn (+5) round out the top 10.
Purdue's consistency once again showed through as Purdue's four counting scores all ranged from 72 to 74. However, Purdue's counting team played its opening nine (the back nine) in 2-under par, before playing its final nine holes (the front nine) in 5-over par.
Senior Brian Carlson and junior Timmy Hildebrand led the team with opening-round, even-par scores of 72, good for a 22nd-place tie. Carlson was 2-under par through 16 holes before a double-bogey on the par-4 8th hole dropped him to even par on his round. Nonetheless, it marked his seventh round of even-par or better already this year and he has now posted the low round in 9-of-13 possible rounds.
Hildebrand was 2-over par through 14 holes before three straight birdies on Nos. 6 through 8 (his 15th through 17th holes) moved him to 1-under par for his round. He then bogeyed his 18th hole to fall back to even par.
Freshman Joe Weiler is tied for 36th after shooting a 1-over par 73. Weiler bogeyed the first two holes of his round, but managed to get to even par with birdies on Nos. 13 and 15. He was still even par before a late bogey on his 17th hole moved him to over par.
Freshman Jason Hong is tied for 47th at 2-over par 74. Hong was 2-under par through 10 holes, but suffered bogeys on five of his next six holes, before a birdie on his 17th hole improved him to 2-over par for his round.
Cole Bradley is tied for 68th at 5-over par 77, after two tough holes, a double-bogey on No. 15 and a triple-bogey on No. 2, hurt his round. He played the other 16 holes in even-par.
Purdue will tee off round two at 8 a.m. ET, on Monday and will be paired with Vanderbilt and Arizona.
