HARTFORD, Wis. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's golf team struggled late in its round, falling to seventh after two rounds at the Marquette Intercollegiate held at Erin Hills.
The Boilermakers shot a 15-over par 303 to finish 36 holes in 21-over par 597 (294-303), 17 shots behind top-ranked Texas A&M (293-287=580). The Boilermakers were threatening a top-three placing after 36 holes before struggling late in their round. The Purdue counting squad played the last four holes in a combined 10-over par to fall back to seventh after the second round.
However, despite the late struggle, Purdue freshman Jason Hong posted a sensational round and put himself in position for his second top-10 finish in his first three career events.
Hong recorded a 2-under par 70 and sits in a fifth-place tie at even-par 144 (74-70), just five shots off the pace set by Marquette's Austin Kendziorski (67-72=139) and three shots behind defending national champion Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss.
Hong birdied his first hole, parred his next eight holes, bogeyed No. 10, and birdied Nos. 12 and 14 for his second-round 70. The 70 marked his fourth round (out of eight) of even-par or better already this year.
Freshman Cole Bradley shot a second-round 77 and is tied for 27th at 6-over par 150 (73-77), the same as junior Timmy Hildebrand (72-78). Brian Carlson is tied for 49th at 9-over par 153 (75-78) and Jarle Volden is tied for 79th at 17-over par 161 (83-78).
Individually, Joe Weiler is tied for 72nd at 15-over par 159 (79-80).
