CARMEL, Ind. ââ'¬" Purdue used a second-round surge to catapult to the top of the leaderboard at the Crooked Stick Invitational entering tomorrow's final round.
The Boilermakers were in fourth place after 18 holes, but fired a season-low round of 11-under par 277 to jump to the lead after 36 holes. Purdue totaled a two-round total of 8-under par 568 (291-277) to lead Georgia by five shots (573) and Kentucky by six shots (574). North Florida (575), Michigan State (577) and Illinois (577) round out the top six.
The field consists of eight teams, including Purdue, ranked in the nation's top 100, according to the latest Golfweek standings.
Purdue's second-round score of 277 tied for the fifth-best round in school history and in relation to par, the 11-under score ranks fourth.
The Boilermakers easily led the field in pars made during the first day, recording 122 pars through 36 holes. Kentucky was second at 112.
Purdue individuals hold down two of the top six spots as Timmy Hildebrand is tied for the individual lead at 5-under par 139 (68-71), while Brian Carlson is tied for third just one shot back at 4-under par 140 (75-65).
Hildebrand bogeyed his first hole of the day, teeing off on No. 7 in the front nine, but played nearly flawless after that during his opening 18 holes. He posted three birdies in a four-hole span on the back nine to record his season-low score and his sixth career round in the 60s with an opening-round 68. He was even par for the majority of his second round before a birdie on his final hole moved him to the top of the leaderboard.
Carlson managed just one birdie in his opening round en route to a 3-over par 75, but then blistered the challenging Crooked Stick layout in the second round with a 7-under par 65 that featured seven birdies and zero bogeys. His 65 tied for the fourth-best, 18-hole score in school history, the third time he has shot a 65 during his career.
Meanwhile, a pair of freshmen had strong outings during the day, finishing 36 holes in a 21st-place tie at 2-over par 146. Joe Weiler recorded rounds of 72-74, while Jason Hong posted scores of 76-70. Weiler had an outstanding round going in the second round before bogeying each of the last three holes to fall out of the top 20. Hong was under-par for most of the second round, also capping his second round off with a birdie on his final hole.
Freshman Cole Bradley struggled in the opening round, but rebounded in the second round with a 1-under par 71 to finish day one in 54th at 10-over par 154 (83-71).
Individually, Thomas Lewis had an outstanding day, firing a 1-under par 143 (69-74) to sit in a 10th-place tie after 36 holes. Lewis was second after 18 holes.
Purdue will tee off hole No. 1 at 9:45 a.m. ET, in Tuesday's final round and will be paired with Georgia and Kentucky. The Boilermakers are looking for their first team title since the 2015-16 season.
