OXFORD, Ohio - Juniors Taite Kitchel and Joe Young led the way as the Purdue swimming & diving teams swept their season-opening dual at Miami (Ohio) on Friday.

Kitchel and Young both won multiple events and swam the butterfly legs on the victorious 200 medley relays. Kitchel won the 100 fly and 200 individual medley back-to-back as the final two individual events of the meet. Young also demonstrated his versatility with victories in the 100 backstroke and 100 fly.

Returning All-Americans Marat Amaltdinov, Steele Johnson and Kaersten Meitz also won a pair of individual events. Amaltdinov swept the breaststroke events, winning the 200 breast by nine seconds despite swimming the 1,000 free earlier in the meet. Johnson swept the springboard diving events, winning a 3-meter duel with fellow All-American Joe Cifelli. Meitz swept the 200 and 500 freestyle, winning the 500 by 13 seconds. She was also the runner-up in the 50 free.

An all-freshman foursome won the 400 free relay for the Purdue men. Nathan Barsanti, Keith Gill, Dale Williams and Ryan Lawrence teamed up for the victory in their collegiate debuts. The men had the top three finishing teams in both relay events.

"Today was a solid start to the season -- a good road trip and win," Purdue men's coach Dan Ross said. "We learned a lot about our freshmen. Thursday though we get a top-15, maybe top-10, team from the SEC in South Carolina, so we have to grow up really quick in the next six days."

The medley relay, the first event of the day, featured one of the tightest finishes. Only .55 hundredths of a second separated the Boilermakers' first- and third-place teams. Lawrence out-touched Gill by four hundredths to make his team of Adam Noens, Will Schrensky and Young victorious. Lawrence won the 100 free later in the meet.

Danielle Auckley was victorious in the 100 free and also contributed to both relay winners for the women. Jackie Smailis swam the leadoff leg on both relay winners.

Boilermakers finished 1-2 in 14 individual events. The men accomplished the feat 10 times, highlighted by having the top three finishers in the 50 and 100 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 200 IM and 1-meter diving. Kitchel led the way in a 1-2-3 finish for the women in the 200 fly.

Jackson Higgins (200 free) and Cady Farlow (200 breast) joined Meitz as Boilermakers to win an event and finish as the runner-up in another.

Freshman Megan Johnson was the women's recipient of the Boilermaker Award after contributing to the victorious 400 free relay as well as finishing in the top three of both the 100 and 200 free.

Chris Bals, Alex Close, Jake Thomas, Amaltdinov, Cifelli, Noens were officially named the men's captains before the meet Friday.

Purdue competes again Thursday when it hosts South Carolina for the home opener at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The South Carolina men were ranked 16th in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America's preseason top 25. The co-ed dual begins at 6 p.m. ET.
