Purdue 5th After 18 Holes at Erin Hills

HARTFORD, Wis. ââ'¬" Purdue was one of two teams to have four players in the top 30 after 18 holes, sitting in fifth place after the first round at the Marquette Intercollegiate, played at Erin Hills, the host of the 2017 U.S. Open in June.

The Boilermakers continued to show their consistency, as their four counting scores were 72, 73, 74 and 75 for a 6-over par 294, good for fifth place after the first round. South Florida leads at even-par 288, and is followed by Marquette (290; +2), UTEP (291; +3) and No. 1-ranked Texas A&M (293; +5). Purdue is followed by Michigan State (298), UC Davis (299), UCLA (300), Florida State (301), Northwestern (301), Wisconsin (301), Augusta (304), Ole Miss (308), Iowa State (310) and Northern Illinois (312).

Four of the teams in the field (Purdue, Iowa State, Florida State and Ole Miss) made last year's NCAA Championships.

Purdue and Texas A&M are the only teams in the field with four players in the top 30 after the opening round.

Junior Timmy Hildebrand led the Purdue contingent in round one with an even-par 72, good for T-10th after 18 holes. Starting on the back nine, Hildebrand was 1-under par at the turn, but bogeyed his 10th hole and double-bogeyed his 11th hole to fall to 2-over par. He would birdie his 12th and 16th hole and par the remainder for an even-par 72, his third round of even-par or better this year.

Freshman Cole Bradley is tied for 14th at 1-over par 73, recording three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys on his round. He bogeyed his second hole of the day, but birdied his fourth, fifth and seventh holes to move to 2-under on his round through eight holes. Three bogeys in his final 10 holes dropped him to 1-over par.

Bradley's classmate, Jason Hong, is tied for 22nd at 2-over par 74. Hong struggled early in his round, with a triple bogey on his fourth hole and a double bogey on his ninth hole to shoot a 40 on his opening nine. However, he responded with a birdie and an eagle on his 10th and 11th holes and played the front nine in 2-under par for his 74.

He was one of three players to record an eagle on the day, his coming on the 358-yard, par-4 second hole. It's the third eagle this year for a Purdue player on a par-4.

Brian Carlson is tied for 28th at 3-over par 75. Carlson was steady in his round, but could only manage one birdie during his opening round.

Jarle Volden is 83rd at 11-over par 83. Playing as an individual, freshman Joe Weiler shot an opening-round 79, to be tied for 63rd after 18 holes.

The Boilermakers will tee off at 11:30 a.m., to 12:10 p.m. ET, off hole No. 1 in the second round.
