SUGAR GROVE, Ill. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's golf team pieced together consistent efforts throughout the lineup and sit in third place after 36 holes at the Northern Intercollegiate held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.

The Boilermakers totaled a two-round tally of 1-under par 575 (286-289) to wrap up day one seven shots behind second-place Virginia (-8) and 29 shots behind a sizzling effort from Marquette (-30).

The host school, Northern Illinois, is fourth at even-par 576, while Iowa State is fifth at 1-over par 577. Loyola (Md.) and Michigan are tied for sixth at 3-over par 579.

The Boilermakers got to as low as 9-under par late in their second round, but the counting team played its last 19 holes combined in 8-over par to fall out of second and into third place entering tomorrow's final round.

Despite the late falter in hot conditions, Purdue ended the first day second in the field in pars made (115) and par-4 scoring (4.11).

Senior Brian Carlson continued his strong early-season play, finishing 36 holes in 4-under par 140 (70-70) to sit in a seventh-place tie after 36 holes. Carlson had a strong day, and outside of a triple-bogey on his second-to-last hole (No. 17), finished the day with 22 pars and 10 birdies among his 36 holes.

Jarle Volden is tied for 19th at even-par 144 (71-73). Volden recorded his first round of even-par or better this year in the first round with a 1-under par 71, and was 1-under par through 15 holes in his second round, before a pair of late bogeys dropped him to even-par for the day, still in the top 20.

Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 23rd at 1-over par 145 (72-73). Hildebrand played his entire round within one shot of par on both sides during his rounds, accounting for seven birdies, eight bogeys and 21 pars on his day.

Cole Bradley is tied for 29th at 2-over par 146 (73-73). Bradley was playing well in the second round, before finishing his day bogey-double bogey-bogey to fall over par. However, he was 3-under par through the first 15 holes of his second round, recording five birdies during that stretch.

Joe Weiler is tied for 49th at 5-over par 149 (75-74). Weiler was steady outside of a pair of double bogeys that set him back in both rounds. In his other 34 holes during the day, he played in just 1-over par in his first action on the counting team.

Freshman Jason Hong and sophomore Thomas Lewis are also playing as individuals. Hong is off to an outstanding start, posting a 36-hole total of 2-under par 142 (70-72), good for T-13th. Lewis is 66th at 11-over par 155 (79-76).

The Boilermakers will be paired with Marquette and Virginia in Monday's final round, teeing off at 9:30 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1.
