WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Another sport gets underway this weekend as volleyball plays host to the annual Mortar Board Premier tournament on Belin Court at Holloway Gymnasium. No. 25 Purdue faces Oral Roberts at 10 a.m. today, Cleveland State at 7:30 p.m. today and Alabama at 3 p.m. tomorrow.

The Boilermakers, under 15th-year head coach Dave Shondell, are coming off their 11th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 13 seasons after finishing 19-14 in 2016. This season's roster consists of 10 returning players, including four seniors, and five newcomers.

Purdue has sold a record number of season tickets, more than 1,000, and sellout crowds on again are expected on a routine basis.

Meanwhile, Purdue and Shondell have agreed on a six-year contract extension through the 2022 season. Shondell and his assistants, John Shondell and Kathy Jewell, have led the Boilermakers to a 301-165 overall record, including a 181-127 mark against Big Ten Conference opponents, over the last 14 seasons.

Team USA Wins Pool C

Team USA, a.k.a. the Purdue men's basketball team, won Pool C at the World University Games in Taipei with a 5-0 record.

Team USA capped its undefeated run with a 101-61 victory over Estonia this morning and will play Israel, the No. 2 seed from Pool D, in the WUG quarterfinals Aug. 27. The semifinals are Aug. 28 and the championship game Aug. 29.

Previously, Team USA defeated Argentina (89-76), United Arab Emirates (127-53), Czech Republic (107-78) and Romania (120-62).

Purdue's average margin of victory has been nearly 40 points.

Meaney Mines Silver at World University Games

Sophomore diver Emily Meaney won a silver medal in synchronized 10-meter at the World University Games on Aug. 21 in Taipei.

Paired with Brittany O'Brien, the Australian team posted a list score of 297.84, merely 5.7 points behind the gold-medal winning team from South Korea.

Meaney is the first Boilermaker to medal at the World University Games since Ashley Karnes won 1-meter bronze for the USA in 2009. Dating to Karnes' achievement, Purdue divers now have won 10 medals at the three most prominent international events: the Olympic Games, FINA World Championships and World University Games.

Meaney was a platform All-American as a freshman at Purdue after finishing in seventh place at the NCAA Championships.

Let's Play Football in Indianapolis

The Jeff Brohm era of Purdue football is just over a week away from officially getting underway.

On Sept. 2, the Boilermakers take on Louisville at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Kickoff for the nationally televised game is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

But there will be more than a primetime game in the Circle City.

The festivities begin Sept. 1, with Circle Up! Boiler Tailgate 2.0. From noon to 2:30 p.m., Purdue Athletics will take over Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis for a free tailgate event hosted by the Boiler Business Exchange. Food and drinks will be sold by various vendors. Purdue Pete and the cheerleaders, the Boilermaker Special and the "All-American" Marching Band will be on hand, and a number of Purdue dignitaries will be attendance to pump up the crowd when the football team arrives at approximately 2 p.m.

From 3 to 7 p.m. on gameday, the popular Boilermaker Crossing event will be staged at the Pan Am Plaza and Pavilion, just northeast of Lucas Oil Stadium. The event, hosted by Purdue Athletics, the John Purdue Club and the Purdue Alumni Association, is free to all fans and will feature giveaways, balloon artists, face painters, inflatables and more activities for the entire family. Soul Street Band will provide live music. There will be an indoor beer garden with a cash bar. The Boilermaker Crossing will be the best place to get ready for the season opener.

Soccer (1-1) plays host to Indiana State at 1 p.m. Sunday at Folk Field. It is GLRSA/Boilers FC Youth Soccer Day, which always draws a large crowd ... Women's basketball head coach Sharon Versyp and club rowing & crew head coach Dave Kucik will serve as honorary co-chairs for the 25th anniversary of Hunger Hike. A 5K run is set for Sept. 16 at the Celery Bog Nature Area in West Lafayette.
