Purdue Can't Make Move in Round Two

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's golf team showed some improvement in Saturday's second round of the NCAA Golf Championships, but it wasn't enough to move up the leader board as the Boilermakers finished the round in 27th place.

The Boilermakers shot a 7-over par 295, for a 36-hole total of 17-over par 593 (298-293), to sit 31 shots off the pace set by UNLV (14-under par).

Purdue had its chance to move up the ranks on Saturday, finishing 15 shots out of the 15th-place cutline to qualify for Monday's fourth round. Saturday's second round was played in perfect conditions, as sun splashed the Rich Harvest Farms layout without a breath of wind.

The 30 teams in the field took advantage, averaging 73.10 strokes per round for the 156-player field while 17 of the teams posted rounds of even-par or better.

With some weather forecast to move into the area Sunday, Purdue will more than likely be playing its final round of the season.

"You couldn't ask for better conditions than we had today, so that is what makes the round so discouraging," head coach Rob Bradley said. "We definitely had our chances to make a move today, but we just couldn't get putts to fall or couldn't get up-and-down when we needed to. We just needed more from our depth and more consistency throughout the whole lineup. We need to go out tomorrow and just have some fun and play the way that we know we can."

Senior Fermando Barco is in 50th place after two rounds, following his opening-round 73 with a 1-under 71 to sit at even-par 144 (73-71) after 36 holes. Barco was 1-under par before a bogey-par-double bogey stretch on holes 15 through 17 (Purdue started on the back nine today) moved him to 2-over par. He would right the ship, playing the final 10 holes in 3-under par, including birdies on Nos. 7 and 9 to finish his round.

It marked his 12th round of even-par or better this year and was his low round in five NCAA Championship rounds.

Austin Eoff also showed improvement on Saturday, posting an even-par 72 to sit in 115th place after 36 holes at 7-over par 151 (79-72). Eoff recorded three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars on his day for his 15th round this year of even-par of better. In 147 career rounds, Eoff has been at par or better in 65 of them.

Timmy Hildebrand couldn't get anything going in round two, posting a 5-over par 77 and sitting in 80th place at 3-over par 147 (70-77). Hildebrand had several good looks at birdie during his round, but couldn't get them to fall, posting 13 pars and five bogeys during the day.

Jarle Volden was in the same boat as Hildebrand, recording a 4-over par 76 to finish two rounds in 124th place at 8-over par 152 (76-76).

Thomas Lewis bounced back from a tough opening round to post a 4-over par 76 and is at 13-over par 157 (81-76). Lewis had it going in the middle of the round, posting three birdies in a four-hole span. However, be bogeyed two of the last six holes to fall to 4-over par 76.

Purdue will tee off in Monday's third round at 1:40 p.m. ET / 12:40 p.m. CT, off hole No. 10 and paired with Lipscomb and New Mexico.
