BALTIMORE - Brian Carlson fired a 1-under par 69 to lead Purdue to a 4-over par 284 after 18 holes at the 98th Big Ten Championships.
The Boilermakers are in third place after a warm opening round at the pristine Baltimore Country Club. Purdue shot a 4-over par 284 to trail only Illinois (269; -11) and Ohio State (283; +3) entering tomorrow's second round.
Purdue's first-round cumulative score of 284 was its fifth-lowest total in its Big Ten Championships history.
"The guys at the bottom of the lineup really carried us today and I thought Brian Carlson looked really solid all day," head coach Rob Bradley said. "I really thought we managed a pretty good round considering our two best players had the two highest scores. I am very confident that they will get it going the next two days. We are going to need all five players to score tomorrow to get us back in position. I know we can, we just have to get out there and play the way we can."
Under near-perfect skies and temperatures soaring into the mid-80s, scoring conditions were almost ideal for the 14 teams in the field. Carlson, playing in the No. 5 position, took advantage, shooting an opening-round 69 that featured five birdies. His lone real blemish was a double-bogey on No. 16, after a spotter incorrectly marked his ball with her flag after hitting into the deep rough right of the fairway. Carlson was forced to re-tee, taking a double-bogey six on the hole.
Carlson's five birdies were the second most in the field and his 69 equaled the lowest score in the Big Ten Championships for a Boilermaker since Tyler Duncan shot a 68 in the second round in the 2010 Championships.
Sophomore Jarle Volden, playing the No. 4 spot, also had a strong day, shooting a 1-over par 71, good for a 16th-place tie after 18 holes. Volden was 1-under par through 10 holes before bogeys on Nos. 11 and 13 dropped him to 1-over par. However, he played the last five holes in even-par to sit inside the top 20 after one round.
Sophomore Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 23rd at 2-over par 72. Hildebrand was even-par through eight holes, but suffered bogeys on three of his next seven holes to fall to 3-over par on his round. He birdied the par-4 17th to get inside the top 25 at 2-over par for his round.
Fernando Barco joins Hildebrand at 2-over par 72 after 18 holes. Barco bogeyed two of his first three holes, but played the final 15 holes in even par, including the last six holes in 1-under par to also sit inside the top 25.
Austin Eoff is tied for 42nd after shooting a 5-over par 75.
Purdue will be paired with Illinois and Ohio State in Saturday's second round, teeing off from 9:45 a.m., to 10:21 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1. Temperatures in the mid-Atlantic are expected to be near a record on Saturday, reaching close to 90 degrees.
