April 27, 2017 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Athletics benefited from the generosity of many during the university's fourth-annual Day of Giving on Wednesday.
The result was $4.6 million, a department record and the most among all campus units, from 1,210 gifts (second-most among campus units) in the online, social-media-driven event.
The dollar amount represents an increase from last year's total of $3.4 million from 778 donors.
Purdue Athletics received donations from more than 100 department staff members, with some of them giving multiple times, and a number of current student-athletes.
"A sincere thanks to everyone for coming together and making the Purdue Day of Giving a great success for the athletics department," vice president and athletics director Mike Bobinski said. "On behalf of our student-athletes and staff, we really appreciate all those many people who made a gift and/or took the time to encourage others to participate."
The university as a whole raised a record $28.2 million from 15,181 donations in 24 hours to claim, for the third year running, the record for most dollars raised for higher education through a single-day campaign.
The dollar total surpasses last year's $18.3 million by 54 percent. This year's giving day - tabbed "All Together" - also set Purdue records for number of donations received, surpassing last year's 12,872 donations; number of gifts from international donors, which increased by87 percent over last year; and number of countries represented.
