TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Purdue baseball scored the final eight runs of the game to overcome a five-run deficit entering the sixth inning, rallying for a 10-7 victory at Indiana State on Wednesday.
The Boilermakers (19-18) took control of the game with a five-run top of the seventh. It was their first lead since having a 1-0 edge in the second inning. Skyler Hunter delivered an RBI double down the left field line in both the sixth and seventh innings, finishing the night with 4 RBI.
Tanner Schumacher (1-3) retired eight of the nine batters he faced over three scoreless innings, leading the way as the Purdue bullpen worked 5 2/3 innings of three-hit ball. The Sycamores (18-16) didn't score again after Tony Rosselli connected for a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-2. They did not have a base runner advance past first base again until there were two outs in the ninth inning.
Indiana State used eight pitchers. Seven wild pitches, six free passes over the final four frames and a two-run throwing error helped the Boilermakers mount their comeback. The game-tying run scored from second when third baseman Dane Giesler threw the ball away on grounder to third base with two men on and one out in the seventh inning.

Evan Warden put that ball in play with runners on second and third, earning his second RBI of the night. He later scored the go-ahead run on Hunter's second double. The second baseman also connected for his second home run of the season and scored three times. He extended his reached base safely streak to 18 consecutive games.
Hayden Grant's one-out single in the top of the seventh was the only hit besides Hunter's doubles Purdue recorded while scoring seven times over the sixth and seventh innings.
Gareth Stroh retired three of the four batters he faced to close out the game in his first relief appearance of the season. Schumacher erased the only hit he allowed via an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play in the bottom of the seventh. Warden made a nice play at second to start the twin killing.
Hunter Wolfe worked a pair of 1-2-3 innings in his first collegiate start. But in between, ISU scored four times via five singles in the bottom of the second. Rosselli delivered a two-out, two-run single to cap the rally and finish the night with five RBI.
Harry Shipley (double, HBP, RBI single) and Mike Madej (walk, single, HBP) both reached base safely three times. Purdue hit into a double play in each of the first two frames and had a pair of base runners erased, stranding only three runners on base for the night.
The Boilermakers return to action Friday when they open a 10-game homestand and three-game series against Illinois. The Fighting Illini are set to make their first appearance in West Lafayette since April 2012 and thus their first appearance at Alexander Field. They were the only Big Ten team yet to play at the fifth-year ballpark. First pitch Friday is set for 6 p.m. ET.
