WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team dominated the court Saturday, defeating Michigan State 7-0 outside at the Schwartz Tennis Center. It was the team's first outdoor match at home this season and eighth clean sweep of an opponent. The Boilermakers last shutout Niagara 4-0 in Chicago.
Renan Hanayama and Benjamin Ugarte cruised to a 6-0 victory over Doug Francken and Billy Shisler on court two; No. 7 Gergely Madarasz and Ricky Medinilla then clinched the doubles point on court one. The junior and senior duo bested Michael Dube and Jasper Koenen 6-2 to remain perfect through spring play.
In singles, all six Boilermakers defeated their opponent in straight sets. Madarasz's 6-4, 6-4 victory over Koenen extended his win-streak to six, dating back to March 1, and remains tied for first on the team with 11 dual-match singles wins. Stephan Koenigsfest joins Madarasz at the top of the leaderboard; the freshman clinched the victory Saturday, defeating Ivan Rakic 6-1, 6-4 on court four.
Hanayama leads all Boilermakers on the year, though, with 16 singles wins. He bested Alexander Kim 6-2, 6-4 on court five just after the clinch.
