WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team evened its Big Ten record to 4-4 Friday, defeating Iowa 5-2 inside the Schwartz Tennis Center.
The Boilermakers opened the match with doubles wins on courts one and two. No. 20 Gergely Madarasz and Ricky Medinilla defeated Kareem Allaf and Josh Silverstein 6-1 on the first, and Renan Hanayama and Benjamin Ugarte bested Robin Haden and Jake Jacoby 6-1 as well on the second.
After the break, Purdue clinched the victory with three straight wins on courts one, three and four. Both No. 95 Madarasz and unranked Ugarte carried their momentum into singles, defeating Allaf 6-4, 6-4 and Jacoby 6-1, 6-0, respectively. Freshman Stephan Koenigsfest then secured the victory for the Boilermakers with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jonas Larsen. Koenigsfest and Madarasz remain tied for most dual-match singles wins with 13 apiece.
While Purdue slipped on courts two and six after the clinch, Athell Bennett padded the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Jason Kerst on the sixth.
The Boilermakers return home Sunday to close out their home schedule with a doubleheader against Nebraska at noon ET and Eastern Kentucky at 4 p.m.
