More Honors for 'Biggie'
Men's basketball sophomore forward Caleb Swanigan has received the Lute Olson Award as the national player of the year by CollegeInsider.com. He also is recipient of the Pete Newell Big Man of the Year Award.
Swanigan recorded one of the top statistical seasons not only in Purdue history, but NCAA annals. He averaged 18.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 52.7 percent from the field, including 44.7 percent from three-point range, and 78.1 percent from the free throw line.
On April 5, Swanigan announced he would explore the NBA Draft evaluation process for the second straight year. He is not hiring an agent, meaning he could return to Purdue for the 2017-18 season. He must announce his final intent by May 24.
Baseball Welcomes Indiana to Alexander Field
Baseball (15-13, 3-3 B1G) plays host to intrastate rival Indiana (15-11-2, 3-2-1) at Alexander Field for the first time ever this weekend. A point will be on the line in the Governor's Cup.
Game times are 6 p.m. ET today and tomorrow and 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Hoosiers were last here in 2011 at Lambert Field. Purdue and Indiana did not play in the regular season in 2012, 2013 and 2015, and the Boilermakers played in Bloomington in 2014 and 2016.
After playing each of its first seven weekends on the road, Purdue will be at home for five of the next six weekends. Nineteen of the Boilermakers' next 25 games through May 14 are scheduled to be played at Alexander Field. Purdue's 14 true road wins are easily the most in the Big Ten and more than the program totaled in the last two seasons combined (10).
The Boilermakers' double play combination of redshirt sophomore second baseman Evan Warden (17) and junior shortstop Harry Shipley (14) came into this week ranked 1-2 nationally in being hit by pitches.
Meanwhile, 10 former Purdue players are set to begin the 2017 season in pro ball, at levels ranging from the major leagues to independent ball. For the complete lowdown, click here.
Women's Track & Field Sweeps Big Ten Honors
Women's track & field sweep this week's Big Ten honors with junior Symone Black named Track Athlete of the Week and redshirt junior Savannah Carson recognized as Field Athlete of the Week.
At the Texas Relays on March 31, Black ran the second-fastest 400-meter hurdles time of her career at 56.18 seconds to finish second. That clocking ranks second in the country this season and is 0.15 of a second shy of the school record that she owns.
The following day in Austin, Texas, Carson broke the Purdue long jump record. She had four jumps of at least 6.47 meters (21-feet, 2.75-inches), all better than the previous school record of 6.45 meters (21-feet 2-inches). Her best mark was a wind-legal (+1.1) distance of 6.54 meters (21-feet 5.50-inches), which is tops in the nation this season.
Both track & field teams compete at the Battle on the Bayou in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, tomorrow against Penn State, USC and host LSU.
