SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's golf team started fast in round one and sits in a fourth-place tie after 36 holes at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate held at the Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course.
The Boilermakers are currently at 4-under par 572 after rounds of 281-291, to sit in a fourth-place tie with Saint Mary's. Michigan (-14), Northwestern (-9) and Kansas (-8) round out the top three. The Boilermakers will be paired with the Gaels and Alabama in tomorrow's final round.
Leading the Boilermakers is senior Fernando Barco, who is in a tie for second at 7-under par 137 (71-66). Barco had a strong day ranking tied for fourth in the field with 12 birdies. In his opening round, he was 4-under par through 11 holes, but bogeyed three of his last seven holes to finish his opening round with a 1-under par 71. Barco then had an impressive second round, posting the 18th-best round in school history with a 6-under par 66. He tallied seven birdies against one bogey in recording his second-best career round and lowest score by a Purdue golfer this year.
Sophomore Jarle Volden is tied for 20th at even-par 144 (67-77). Volden had a superb opening round with a season-best 67. Volden was 2-over par through eight holes, before birdieing seven of his next nine holes, including six straight, to surge into the top five after 18 holes. Despite struggling a bit in his second round, Volden is in good shape to record his first top-20 finish of the season.
Austin Eoff is tied for 25th at 1-over par 145 (71-74). Eoff tallied seven birdies in his opening round, but a late double-bogey dropped him back off the pace. The opening-round 71 marked his 59th career round (out of 132 played) of even-par or better.
Brian Carlson is tied for 30th at 3-over par 147 (73-74) while Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 49th at 8-over par 152 (72-80). Individually, Thomas Lewis is tied for 30th at 3-over par 147 (73-74).
