CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Purdue men's golf team surged late in the opening round, wrapping up day one at the Hootie at Bulls Bay in sixth place after shooting a 3-under par 285.

The Boilermakers are eight shots behind tournament leader Georgia State (-11) and trail South Carolina (-9), Virginia (-7), Mississippi (-5) and Auburn (-4). The Boilermakers lead prominent programs Houston (-2), North Carolina State (-1), Kentucky (-1) and Kansas (even-par) heading into tomorrow's second round.

The Boilermakers recorded their 10th round of even-par or better this season, already tied for the third most in a season. The school record of even-par or better rounds is 13 set last year. Purdue's 10 rounds of even-par or better have come in just 21 rounds this year.

Purdue's five players were a combined 8-over par through 12 holes before playing the final six holes in a combined 7-under par. The Boilermakers recorded three eagles during that span, including a hole-in-one by Brian Carlson on the par-3 7th hole. It was the second hole-in-one this year by a Purdue player after Jarle Volden recorded an ace at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate three weeks ago.

A pair of Boilermakers sit in T-12th after 18 holes, as both Fernando Barco and Jarle Volden shot opening-round 2-under par 70. Barco had a solid round all day, recording just one bogey, three birdies and 14 pars during his opening round. It marked his fifth straight round of even-par or better, tied for the sixth-longest streak for a Purdue player since 2001-02.

Volden was 2-over par through 12 holes before an eagle-birdie-birdie stretch on his back nine ended his round on a high note and a 2-under par 70. Volden now leads the team with five eagles already this year.

Brian Carlson is tied for 21st after a whirlwind, opening-round 71. Carlson was 2-over par through 15 holes before finishing eagle-birdie-par for his 30th career round of even-par or better.

Austin Eoff is tied for 51st at 2-over par 74 and Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 71st at 4-over par 76.

The Boilermakers will be paired with Mississippi and Auburn in Monday's second round, teeing off hole No. 1, at 9 a.m. ET.
