INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The Boilermakers were after a historic win at the BNP Paribas Open Colligate Tennis Challenge, but fell just short against No. 13 California, losing 4-3 outside at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. A one-point swing would have earned Purdue its first program win over a top-15 opponent and sequentially marked the highest ranked opponent defeated in its history. To date, that mark stands at No. 16, when the Boilermakers defeated Penn State 6-1 on April 11, 2014.

While the top-seed jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with two doubles wins, Purdue rallied back to take the first three singles points. Freshman Stephan Koenigsfest struck first, defeating Bjorn Hoffmann 6-2, 6-3 on court four. No. 102 Gergely Madarasz followed on court two with a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 109 Filip Bergevi, and Renan Hanayama extended his win-streak to 11, besting Connor Heap 6-1, 6-4 on court six.

The Golden Bears then came back with three wins of their own on courts one, three and five to secure the decision and hand the Boilermakers their fourth 4-3 loss this season.

"The difference in today's match was a few points in doubles and three tiebreakers in singles - that's really it," head coach Pawel Gajdzik said. "I'm still very proud of our team; we nearly took down an NCAA final four program. Everybody competed hard and tomorrow brings us another great opportunity in SMU."

Purdue faces the No. 33 Mustangs in the consolation draw Saturday at 11:30 a.m. ET.
