ST. LOUIS - The first round was a difficult one for Purdue's three wrestlers at the NCAA Championships inside the Scottrade Center on Thursday. Each of the Boilermakers went up against a seeded opponent and was unable to come out on the winning end. Thursday's second session will be one of win and advance or lose and bow out as Alex Griffin (157), Jacob Morrissey (174) and Christian Brunner (197) slip into wrestlebacks. Competition resumes at 7 p.m. ET.

In the third period, fifth-seeded Joseph Smith of Oklahoma State took Griffin's 1:45 of riding time accumulated in the second period to 59 seconds to avoid sudden victory for a 4-3 decision. Griffin (24-14) will meet Oklahoma's No. 12 Clark Glass. Glass (23-7) was upset by May Bethea of Penn 3-2 in the first round.

Morrissey was dealt a 12-1 major decision at the hands of 10th-seeded Zac Brunson of Illinois at 174 pounds. At 197, Matt McCutcheon, the No. 5 seed from Penn State, pinned Brunner in 1:53.

Morrissey (16-12) will aim to keep his season alive when he takes on No. 7 Kyle Crutchmer of Oklahoma State in first round of wrestlebacks. The 18-6 Cowboy was upset by SIU Edwardsville's Jake Residori 6-5. Brunner will collide with Big Ten foe Jacob Berkowitz of Northwestern. It will be the third meeting this season between the 23-16 true freshman and the 22-10 redshirt senior. Berkowitz lost 3-2 to Penn's 12th-seeded Frank Mattiace in the first round.
