COLUMBUS, Ohio - A new program record in the 800 freestyle relay highlighted the opening night of the Big Ten Championships for Purdue men's swimming & diving.
Josh Brooks, Josh Ehrman, Filip Bujoczek and James Boone teamed up for a time of 6:26.91, eclipsing the team record of 6:27.10 from the 2015 Big Ten Championships in Iowa City. Brooks and Ehrman were also part of the 800 free relay team that year as sophomores.
Brooks led off the 800 free relay with a 200 split of 1:36.35, which ranks as the fourth fastest in program history. Bujoczek led the way with a 200 split of 1:35.87. He was also part of the Boilermakers' 400 free relay record at the 2014 Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor.
Purdue was eighth in the 800 free relay and ninth in the 200 medley relay Wednesday. The 200 medley team of Kiki Komlenic, Marat Amaltdinov, Austin Flager and Eddy Zawatski posted a time of 1:27.56, which ranks tied for sixth in program history. A poor turn on the final leg of the race cost the Boilermakers about a second and likely a chance at finishing seventh along with challenging the program record. Purdue was ahead of the pace of both Iowa (7th) and Northwestern (8th) going into the final 25 yards.
The Boilermakers have established a new relay record at Big Tens in five of the last seven years. The 800 benchmark has now been eclipsed three times during that span.
The Big Ten Championships continue through Saturday, featuring prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
