RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- The Purdue men's golf team sizzled on the back nine of the second round and moved up six spots to seventh after 36 holes at the Puerto Rico Classic.
Purdue fired a 5-under par 283 on Monday to finish 36 holes in 4-over par 580 (297-283), jumping six spots from 13th to seventh in the team standings. The Boilermakers' 283 was the second-best round of the day behind Clemson's 276.
The Boilermakers now sit just two shots behind Georgia Tech and Middle Tennessee State for fifth place and just five shots behind North Carolina State in fourth.
Clemson (-16) leads the field and is seven shots clear of Georgia (-9) in second place. Kentucky (-5), North Carolina State (-1), Georgia Tech (+2), Middle Tennessee State (+2), Purdue (+4), Ohio State (+5), Northwestern (+6), North Carolina (+10), Mississippi (+14), Virginia Tech (+16), Alabama (+17), UNC Greensboro (+17) and Maryland (+24) round out the field.
The Boilermakers, which started the day in 13th and playing holes 16 through 18 first, finished the back nine a combined 14-under par after playing the front nine in a combined 13-over par. The Boilermakers registered three eagles, 14 birdies and 22 combined pars on the back nine to offset just six bogeys.
Leading the surge was sophomore Timmy Hildebrand with a career-low 5-under par 67, to jump into a sixth-place tie after 36 holes at 3-under par 141 (74-67). Hildebrand improved his placing by 31 spots Monday after standing 37th after 18 holes. Hildebrand was even-par on his round through nine holes, but played his final nine holes in 5-under par, including an eagle on the par-5 11th hole, to finish with his career-low round.
Brian Carlson improved 26 spots from yesterday and is currently T-23rd at 1-over par 145 (76-69). Like Hildebrand, Carlson finished his round on a high note. He was even-par through 12 holes, but used an eagle on the 15th hole to finish 3-under par 69 and record his second round in the 60s this season.
Fernando Barco is tied for 32nd at 2-over par 146 (73-73). Barco was 5-over par through 14 holes, but birdied his last four holes played to move to 1-over par for his round and into the top 40.
Jarle Volden is tied for 48th at 6-over par 150 (74-76) and Austin Eoff is tied for 58th at 8-over par 152 (78-74).
Purdue will be paired with Northwestern and Ohio State during Tuesday's final round, which tees off at 7:30 a.m. ET.
