RIO GRANDE, P.R. ââ'¬" The No. 34-ranked Purdue men's golf team struggled in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic, finishing with a 9-over par 297, good for 13th place after 18 holes.
The Boilermakers, however, remain within shouting distance of a top-five finish, sitting just six shots out of sixth place and five shots out of seventh.
Georgia leads after 18 holes after shooting a 7-under par 281 while North Carolina State (-5), Clemson (-4) and Kentucky (-2) all finished under par as a team after 18 holes. Ohio State (+1), Middle Tennessee State (+3), Mississippi (+4), Maryland (+4), Georgia Tech (+6), Northwestern (+6), Alabama (+8), North Carolina (+8), Purdue (+9), UNC Greensboro (+13) and Virginia Tech (+18) round out the field.
The Boilermakers were second in the field in pars made (60), but registered just eight birdies in their opening round.
Leading Purdue was senior Fernando Barco with a 1-over par 73. Barco started slow, playing his first four holes in 3-over par. However, an eagle on his sixth hole righted the ship and he played the remaining 14 holes in 2-under par for his opening-round 73.
Sophomores Jarle Volden and Timmy Hildebrand followed with scores of 2-over par 74. The duo combined for 30 pars on 36 holes played.
Brian Carlson shot a 4-over par 76 and Austin Eoff tallied a 6-over par 78.
Round two will get underway at 7:30 a.m. ET, at the Rio Mar Resort.
