PALM COAST, Fla. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's golf team earned wins from Thomas Lewis and Jarle Volden, but couldn't muster a third win and fell to Penn State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Match Play Championship.
The Nittany Lions edged Purdue, 3.5 to 2.5, and now the Boilermakers now face top-seeded Michigan State in the consolation bracket, beginning at 8 a.m. ET, on Saturday.
Playing in his first match play competition, freshman Thomas Lewis had a strong performance in the Boilermakers' first match of the day. Lewis defeated Alec Bard by a 4 & 3 score. Lewis would win three of the first five holes and would make the turn three-up. Lewis won the first two holes on the back nine and cruised home for the victory. Lewis won seven of his 15 holes played in the match.
Volden had a remarkable rally in Purdue's last match of the day, coming back from four-down to win the match 2-up over Ryan Dornes. Volden fell 4-down through five holes and still trailed 4-down through seven holes. Volden surged to make it all-square after 13 holes, then closed out the match by winning hole Nos. 15 and 18 to finish the match 2-up.
Fernando Barco and Christian Elliott played a sensational match in the No. 5 slot, finishing their match all-square. Neither player led by more than one hole and Barco trailed just for one hole during the match, finishing all square to earn a half-point for Purdue.
The Boilermakers and the Spartans will tee off at 8 a.m., ET, then will square off against either Michigan or Rutgers in their final match on Saturday afternoon.
