PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Luke Welch, Dylan Lydy and Jacob Morrissey picked up decisions for Purdue in a 27-9 loss to Rutgers on Sunday inside the Rutgers Athletic Center. The loss brought the Boilermakers to 8-3 and 3-2 in Big Ten Conference duals, while the 11th-ranked Scarlet Knights moved to 9-2 and 3-1 in the league.
Welch rebounded from a tiebreaker loss Friday, with a dramatic 5-4 tiebreaker decision of Scott DelVecchio. The 133-pounders were deadlocked at 3-3 at the conclusion of regulation. Halfway through the 60-second sudden victory, DelVecchio was awarded a takedown, which was successfully challenged by Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland. The two points were waved off and the score remained 3-3.
Moving into the tiebreakers, DelVecchio escaped in the first 30-second session to go ahead 4-3. Welch one-upped DelVecchio's escape by reversing him for the win. The win brought the redshirt junior's record to 16-8 and he picked up his second match that went beyond regulation.
Purdue won back-to-back matches coming out of the intermission. Lydy posted his second win of the weekend, beating Willie Scott 6-4. The 165-pounder struck with takedowns in the first and second periods and added a reversal midway through the final period on his way to the 15th win of his redshirt freshman campaign.
The ensuing match at 174 pounds saw Morrissey dispose of his Scarlet Knight opponent, Phillip Bakuckas, 7-4. Continuing with his recent match trends, the second period was key for Morrissey. A takedown followed a quick escape for the redshirt junior gave him a 3-2 advantage. Bakuckas switched positions, only to end up back on bottom with a reversal by Morrissey. He responded to a Bakuckas takedown in the third period with another reversal.
The win is the fourth consecutive for Morrissey as he improved his season mark to 11-6 and maintained an undefeated record in Big Ten duals (4-0).
The Boilermakers return to Holloway Gymnasium for a pair of duals next weekend. Purdue will have its Hammer Down Cancer dual against Nebraska at 7 p.m. ET on Friday.
